Defenseman Scheffelmaier, Left Wing Valeev Reassigned from Worcester (AHL) by St. Louis (NHL)

Peoria, Ill. (December 10, 2003) – Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie of the Peoria Rivermen of the ECHL announced today that defenseman Brett Scheffelmaier and left wing Igor Valeev have been reassigned to the team for conditioning purposes from their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate – the Worcester IceCats – by their NHL parent club, the St. Louis Blues.

Scheffelmaier – a 6-foot-5, 222-pound native of Coronation, Alberta – has played in just two games with two penalty minutes (PIM) in his second season, returning from injured reserve prior to last weekend. As a rookie in 2002-2003, he finished third on the IceCats with 143 PIM, while ranking fifth among AHL rookies and tied for fifth among AHL defensemen with 17 major penalties.

The 22-year-old defenseman was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round (75th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft and was selected by St. Louis in the fifth round (190th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He enjoyed a five-year Major Junior "A" hockey career with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League (WHL), averaging nearly four (4) PIM (3.89) per game over 273 games.

Valeev – a 6-foot, 210-pound native of Snezhensk, Russia – has yet to a play a game this season with Worcester and will see his first action with the Rivermen this weekend. The third-year left wing led the IceCats during his sophomore campaign (2002-2003) with 153 PIM, while posting 18 points (6g, 12a) in 72 games. He was selected by St. Louis in the fourth round (122nd overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

The 22-year-old Valeev enjoyed a three-year Major Junior "A" hockey career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the WHL. He registered Major Junior "A" bests in goals (17), assists (61), points (78) and PIM (175) with the North Bay Centennials in 2000-2001, leading North Bay in PIM and assists, and ranking second in points.

On Friday, December 12 and Saturday, December 13, the Rivermen host the rival Johnstown Chiefs for two straight games at Carver Arena. Game times are 7:05 p.m.

On Friday, December 12, it is a Coca-Cola Finally Friday. Fans may bring a Cherry Coke or Vanilla Coke can to the Carver Arena Box Office to receive a 2-for-1 Upper Bowl ticket offer. Fans are also encouraged to bring a new toy for the U.S. Marine Corps' "Toys for Tots" Holiday Drive. And the Rivermen will wear special Christmas Jerseys to be auctioned off after the game.

On Saturday, December 13, The Incredible Hulk stomps his way into Carver Arena and will sign autographs throughout the game. Tickets for both games are available by calling 673-3200.
