Trenton Thunder News Release

Reading, PA - Matt Cusick came through with a solo homerun in the top of the ninth in a 5-4 Thunder win on Wednesday night over Reading. Cusick smacked a homerun down the leftfield line and Dan Brewer and Austin Krum made standout defensive plays late in the game as Trenton (66-45) did just enough to stave off the Phillies (54-55) from FirstEnergy Stadium.

Austin Krum made a diving catch to end the game with the potential tying and winning runs on. The defense picked up Kevin Whelan (3-3) who tossed the final 1 1/3 of relief. Whelan pitched around two walks in the ninth and stuck out one in the win.

RHP Lance Pendleton left with a 4-3 lead and one out in the seventh inning after allowing a three-run homerun to 3B Cody Overbeck. Josh Schmidt yielded a run to tie the game at 4-4 on a RBI double from Freddy Galvis. Pendleton threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on six hits in the no decision.

Dan Brewer threw out a runner at home plate in the eighth inning to keep the game tied at 4-4. Justin Christian had four hits and an RBI in the win.

Corban Joseph drove in a run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left and Trenton added two more in the second on a Luis Nunez sacrifice fly and a Christian RBI single. Joseph grounded in a run in the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead. The second baseman Joseph has driven in five runs in his first three games at Double-A.

Yohan Flande (7-8) allowed four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched. Flande was removed for RHP Chance Chapman with two outs in the seven innings. Chapman (1-2) was replaced by Sergio Escalona after allowing the homerun to Cusick in the ninth inning.
