
Cats Drown Squirrels on Splash Day, 9-0

MANCHESTER, NH - Right-hander Shawn Hill twirled seven shutout innings and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 9-0, in front of 5,422 on Wednesday afternoon at MerchantAuto.com Stadium. The Cats outhit the Squirrels 16-4 in the victory, which evens the three-game series between the two clubs at a game apiece.
Darin Mastroianni got New Hampshire started when he led off the first inning against Richmond right-hander Felix Romero with a single. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with a single to right-center field to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Adam Loewen followed with a groundout to the right side to score Mastroianni with the game's first run. Eric Thames singled home Hechavarria to give New Hampshire a quick 2-0 lead.
The Cats were back at it in the second as Matt Liuzza doubled with two outs in the inning. Jonathan Diaz singled him home for a 3-0 lead. Romero walked Mastroianni and then called for medical attention from trainer Eric Ortega. Romero left with shoulder fatigue and Ronnie Ray was called upon to finish the inning.
Romero (3-2) lasted just 1 2/3 innings and took the loss for Richmond. He surrendered three earned runs on five hits, walked one and struck out none as he fell for the second time on the season.
New Hampshire tacked on a run against left-hander Andy Sisco in the fifth inning. Thames singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Concepcion Rodriguez singled him home with two outs for a 4-0 lead.
The Fisher Cats put the game away with five runs, all charged to Sisco, in the sixth inning. The first six Fisher Cats reached in the inning, which included RBIs for Hechavarria, Loewen, Thames, Rodriguez and Liuzza.
Meanwhile, Hill (1-0) cruised through his seven innings of work, shutting out the Squirrels on three hits. He walked two and struck out one and he won in his outing of the season for New Hampshire.
The Squirrels were forced to utilize catcher Tyler La Torre as a pitcher to save the bullpen over the final two innings, and he turned in two scoreless innings of relief.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium. RHP Mike MacDonald (3-7, 4.69) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Randy Boone (2-7, 3.95) for New Hampshire.
