Cohoon Pitches Well, But B-Mets Fizzle 8-6

Cohoon worked 5 2/3 innings and left with a chance to win, but the bullpen struggled leading to an 8-6 defeat at the hands of the Harrisburg Senators at NYSEG Stadium Tuesday night. The B-Mets have now lost five of their last six games.

Harrisburg (57-53) pounced on Cohoon in the second inning for a pair of runs. Jesus Valdez and Adam Fox singled to start the frame. Edgardo Baez hit a swinging bunt to first that advanced the runners into scoring position. Jhonatan Solano followed and plated both runs with a single to center.

Binghamton (54-56) responded in the fourth, as the first two hitters of the frame reached on singles putting runners at the corners against starter Brad Peacock. Zach Lutz followed with a double-play groundout to short, bringing the B-Mets within a run, 2-1.

Reyes led off the fifth with a double, however, he was erased on a poor bunt from Cohoon, allowing the hurler to reach on a fielder's choice. Jose Coronado followed with a clean single, putting two on with one out. After Josh Satin struck out, Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled to right, chasing home Cohoon. Coronado followed Cohoon home when Josh Johnson mishandled the relay, which put Binghamton ahead 3-2. Peacock elected to intentionally walk Sean Ratliff to pitch to the right-handed hitting Lutz. The decision backfired as Lutz smoked a double into the left-field corner, upping the lead to three, 5-2.

The Senators issued a reply in the sixth courtesy of a pair of Binghamton errors. Chris Marrero led off with a double off Cohoon. Jesus Valdez followed with a groundball to the right of Coronado at short, in an attempt to backhand the ball, the ball slipped under his glove permitting Valdez to reach and Marrero to advance to third. After Adam Fox hit into a fielder's choice to third, the lefty struck out Edgardo Baez for the second out. He was pulled in favor of right-hander Dylan Owen to face Solano, who already had two knocks off Cohoon. Solano burned Owen with a double to right, plating both runners to move Harrisburg within a run, 5-4.

Peacock was pulled for a pinch-hitter after the double. Tim Pahuta stepped in for the starter and struck out on a breaking ball in the dirt. Mike Nickeas picked up the ball and fired to first, but the throw was errant, allowing Pahuta to reach and Solano to reach third. Owen then walked Danny Espinosa to load the bases and Johnson followed with a ground-rule double to left-center, vaulting the Senators into the lead, 6-5. All four runs were unearned due to the two errors.

Cohoon was charged for four runs - two earned - on seven hits in his finest outing with Binghamton. Owen was charged with the blown save and the loss, his second of the season.

New arrival Carlos Muniz allowed a pair of runs in the seventh to advance the Harrisburg lead to three, 8-5.

Coronado and Josh Satin ripped back-to-back doubles off left-hander Jack Spradlin in the eighth to get within two runs, but that was as close as the B-Mets would come. Satin's two-bagger extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Cole Kimball came out of the pen in the eighth and shut down Binghamton over the final two innings, holding the B-Mets hitless with three strikeouts for his second save.

Nieuwenhuis and Coronado managed two hits each in the losing effort.

Binghamton will attempt to draw even in the three-game set Wednesday at 6:35 PM. RHP Chris Schwinden (4-6, 5.35) will go up against RHP Andrew Kown (6-4, 3.78) of Harrisburg. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
