New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - New Britain's Juan Portes fell a double shy of the cycle and finished with four hits and four RBI to lead a 15-hit attack as the Rock Cats cruised to a 13-6 win over Erie.
Erik Lis pounded out four hits as well in addition to knocking in three runs and scoring three runs for the Rock Cats. Jeff Howell added three hits and three runs in just his second appearance since being assigned to New Britain after the Twins received the catcher in a trade from Kansas City.
The Seawolves took an early lead when Cale Iorg doubled off of Bobby Lanigan to lead off the game. Brandon Douglas followed with a triple to knock in Iorg for the 1-0 advantage. Lanigan allowed a leadoff double in the second as well, this time to Billy Nowlin, who advanced to third on a passed ball. Nowlin then scored on an RBI single by Deik Scram.
In the bottom of the second, the Rock Cats clawed back with two home runs. Howell led off the inning with a shot over the center field wall for his first Eastern League home run. Lis followed with a single before Portes delivered a two-run homer to put the Rock Cats on top, 3-2.
Lis tacked on another run when his ground out scored Joe Benson in the third. Estarlin De Los Santos added another run in the fourth when he tripled to center and scored on a fielding error by center fielder Brandon Jones. In the fifth, Mark Dolenc added a two-run double that extended the lead, 7-2.
The Rock Cats blew open the game with three-run innings in both the seventh and eighth. The seventh inning was highlighted by a two-run triple by Portes. Lis added a two-run double in the eighth.
Lanigan (2-0) scattered seven hits and limited the Seawolves to two earned runs through 5 2/3 innings. Erie's Thad Weber (7-12) was struck for seven runs on 10 hits in five innings.
