Winston-Salem Dash News Release
The Winston-Salem Dash (24-16) broke the game open with a seven-run third inning and held off a late Greensboro push to defeat the Grasshoppers (25-15), 13-9, on Tuesday night.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Dash offense erupted in the third.
Alex Ungar started the rally with a two-run home run before RBI hits from Grant Magill and George Wolkow helped Winston-Salem send 12 batters to the plate in the inning. Wolkow capped the outburst with a three-run homer down the right-field line, giving the Dash a commanding 7-1 lead.
Greensboro attempted to chip away in the middle innings, cutting the deficit to 7-4 after a two-run fourth inning highlighted by a solo home run from Murf Gray.
The Dash answered again in the fifth when Wolkow ripped an RBI triple to right field, extending the lead back to four runs.
An inning later, Winston-Salem delivered another massive swing.
After a wild pitch brought home a run, Boston Smith crushed a three-run home run to right field, pushing the Dash advantage to 12-4 and restoring momentum.
Winston-Salem added another insurance run in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Caleb Bonemer, stretching the lead to 13-4.
Greensboro refused to go quietly late. A three-run home run from Jared Jones highlighted a four-run eighth inning for the Grasshoppers, who added another run in the ninth to trim the deficit further.
Despite the late rally, Winston-Salem's early offensive explosion proved too much to overcome.
Wolkow finished with a home run, triple, and four RBIs, while Smith and Ungar also homered in the victory.
