Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
COMING UP: The Cincinnati Cyclones (21-13-1-2) enjoy a few days off for the ECHL's All-Star Game break. The club will resume with one game this week--a Friday night (Jan. 19) sojourn to Toledo. It will be the fifth, and final, trip to the Glass City during the regular season. Cincinnati begins the week as the North Division leader, six points ahead of second place Trenton and seven ahead of third place Dayton.
DESJARDINS TO PLAY IN ALL-STAR GAME: Cincinnati Cyclones goaltender Cedrick Desjardins will represent the club in the league's All-Star Game on Wednesday night (Jan. 17--7pm MT) from Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho. He will be the third netminder in the history of the club to participate in the annual classic. Desjardins is 15-8 this season with a 2.38 goals against average and a .922 save percentage. Cedrick will also compete in the Skills Challenge on Tuesday night.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Cyclones are currently two games into a five-game road swing. Cincinnati is 2-0 thus far on the trip. It will be 18 days (Jan. 31 vs. Reading) from the start of the trip until the Cyclones play a game at home. The Cyclones are now 8-7-1 (.531 winning percentage) away from U.S. Bank Arena.
THE WEEK IN REVIEW: Wednesday night (Jan. 10), the squad dropped a 5-1 decision to Trenton. That loss ended an eleven game (9-0-2) unbeaten streak at U.S. Bank Arena dating back to Nov. 16. Friday night (Jan. 12), a 4-1win over Toledo saw two point games from Sam Ftorek and Rory Rawlyk and a three-point effort from Jason Deitsch. Saturday night (Jan. 13), the club had plenty to celebrate (see below) in a 4-1 win at Reading. On Sunday (Jan. 14), the Cyclones took a 3-1 win at Reading.
PLENTY TO CELEBRATE: Saturday night (Jan. 13), the Cyclones had plenty to celebrate in the 4-1 win over Reading. The club hit it 20th win at exactly the halfway mark of the season. Barret Ehgoetz collected a goal in his 100th game as a professional and rookie Jarred Mohr scored his first professional goal on his 22nd birthday. Matt Macdonald appeared in his 100th pro game Saturday as well. On Sunday (Jan. 14), Jimmy Bonneau joined the 100 games as a pro club.
FTOREK DOING FINE: Cyclones forward Sam Ftorek has a point in each game since the start of the calendar year. Fotrek has an eight-game point scoring streak (4-5-9) since Jan. 5 and that is the longest by a Cincinnati player this season. Sam's streak is currently the third-longest in the ECHL and is halfway to the league-long of 16 games set earlier this season (Kevin Baker - Texas, 16 games).
SPEAKING OF STREAKING: Cyclones rookie defenseman Conrad Martin has eleven points (1-10-11) in the past ten games and has a six-game road point scoring streak (1-7-8). Martin netted his first goal of the season in Saturday's (Jan. 13) 4-1 win at Reading.
NATURAL BORN KILLERS: The Cyclones lead the ECHL in penalty killing at 88.7 percent. Cincinnati has killed off 58 of the last 60 shorthanded situations (96.7 percent) since Dec. 28. After surrendering a pair of power play goals into he first six minutes of the game at Dayton on Dec. 28, the squad went 336 minutes, 13 seconds without surrendering a power play goal.
UNPACK THE BAGS, WE'RE GOING TO BE HERE A WHILE...: The Cyclones begin the week as the leaders of the North Division. Cincinnati moved into a share of the top spot on Dec. 23 and has not been moved from first place since (that's 23 days in a row for those of you keeping score at home).
ROSTER MOVES: The Cyclones announced Sunday (Jan. 14) that defenseman Rory Rawlyk has been recalled by Binghamton (AHL) and will be in the lineup tonight for the Senators. Rawlyk was signed as a free agent by the Cyclones on Dec. 1 and pumped in four goals and twelve assists for 16 points in 21 games. A starter in the ECHL for the American Conference All-Star team last season while with Charlotte, Rawlyk had two assists in the 7-6 loss to the National Conference.
EIGHT OVER: The Cyclones have an 21-13-3 record, eight games above .500. The last time Cincinnati was as many games over the break even point was was March 5, 2003--when the club was 29-21-6. That team would finish seven games over .500 (36-29-7) and would lose in the seventh game of the American Conference finals to Atlantic City--which would capture the Kelly Cup. The last time the club was nine games above .500 was Feb. 26, 2003, following a 6-5 shootout win over Louisiana, to put the club at 28-19-6. The last time the club was ten or more games ahead of break even? The close of the expansion season of the club (1995-96), when the team finished the year at 39-24-7 (15 games ahead).
IN THE COMMUNITY: Today (Jan. 15), several Cyclones players will be spending time at the Fun Factory with members of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. Wednesday (Jan. 17), several of the players will be at Taft Elementary, helping to educate students in the game of hockey in preparation of their visit for the 'Education In Hockey Day' event on Tuesday, March 27.
BEST OF TIMES, WORST OF TIMES: Since the Cyclones lost a season-worst five consecutive games from Nov. 4-16, the club has bounced back with a 17-6-3 record over the next 26 games (.712 winning percentage).
QUICK HITS: Cedrick Desjardins leads the ECHL in shutouts with four...The Cyclones have yielded just two shorthanded goals this season--fewest in the ECHL...Cincinnati is 9-7-3 in one-goal decisions.
