Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

The Pensacola Ice Pilots four game road trip ended on a bad note on Monday afternoon with a 6-4 loss to the Columbia Inferno.

The Inferno snapped a 3-3 tie with three power play goals, two of them on a five-minute major penalty.

In the opening period, the Ice Pilots trailed early 1-0 but tied the game up at 1-1 when Dwayne Hay made his return to the line-up a solid one when he scored from Niko Tuomi. Inferno goaltender Robert Gherson passed the puck right to Hay who put it back into the net.

The second period featured a total of five goals. After Columbia took a 2-1 lead the Ice Pilots answered with two of their own when Mike Wirll converted a pass from Rob Rankin and then Dallas Steward with a great shot on a good transition play and it was 3-2.

But Columbia tied the game less than a minute after the Ice Pilots took the lead. And the Inferno retook the lead with just 8 seconds remaining in the period on a five minute powerplay. Mike Wirll was ejected for a five minute match penalty for slew footing.

Columbia added an early third period goal to make it 5-3 before Pensacola made it 5-4 when David Wrigley scored. However, the Inferno would score one late on the power play when the Ice Pilots were called for too-many men.
