Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Cincinnati Cyclones (21-6-1-1=44) offense was too much for the Wheeling Nailers (9-17-1-2=21) as the Cyclones' David Desharnais scored his first professional hat trick and Barret Ehgoetz scored two goals in Cincinnati's 8-2 victory at WesBanco Arena Thursday night.
The Nailers actually scored two of the first three goals of the game. Joe Jensen struck first when stole the puck at his own blue line and beat Cedrick Dejardins with a slap shot at 6:29 of the first period. Justin Chewdurok and Aaron Boogaard were credited with assists on Jensen's second goal of the year.
The Cyclones evened it up at 11:02 with the lone power-play goal of the contest. Tyler Howells found Desharnais for a one-timer from the right circle to beat Martin Houle.
Wheeling regained the lead at 13:35 with an Aaron Clarke goal. It came off a turnover at the blue line and Clarke dragged the puck around a diving defender before sliding through the legs of Desjardins for the unassisted goal. The goal began a stretch of four goals in 2:02.
The Cyclones scored three times in 1:11 to take a 4-2 lead which they never gave back. The first of the three coming at 14:26, when Ehgoetz writsted one just under the crossbar for his 11th of the season. Thomas Beauregard and Scott Reynolds were given assists on the play and each finished with two on the night.
The eventual game winner came at 15:07 when Travis Fuller fed Avery Wilson a backhanded pass from behind the net for Wilson's fourth goal of the season. It was the Cyclones' first lead of the game at 3-2.
Cincy's final goal of the first period came from Desharnais at 15:37, prompting Glenn Patrick to bring on Nathan Marsters in relief.
The second period saw another pair of quick goals from the Cyclones. Desharnais completed his hat trick 6:59 and Ehgoetz banked a goal in off a skate at 7:45 to take a 6-2 lead into the third.
Travis Fuller and Cory Urquhart scored 2:01 apart (6:41; 842) to seal the victory for the Cyclones.
The Nailers take on the Johnstown Chiefs on Friday at 7:35pm. The first 1,000 children in attendance will receive a Wheeling Nailers Youth Jersey. Call 304-234-GOAL or visit www.wheelingnailers.com for ticketing information.
