Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
WHEELING, West Virginia - The Cincinnati Cyclones have never played well in Wheeling, a 5-15 record all-time and a 2-10 record in the last twelve since 2004 would attest to this. Losing the ECHL's top goal scorer, Jean-Michel Daoust, earlier in the day would only make things more difficult.
Under normal circumstances, it would appear it was another Cyclones night at WesBanco Arena.
Instead, a three goal effort from rookie David Desharnais, his first as a pro, a two goal effort from Barret Ehgoetz and having five other players record two point games was enough for a 8-2 win for the Cyclones Thursday night in Wheeling. The triumph runs Cincinnati winning streak to five games and gives it sole possession of first place in the North Division.
The Cyclones exploded for four first period goals in opening a 4-2 edge. Wheeling started the scoring at 6:29, when Joe Jensen took a turnover at the Cincinnati blueline and blasted a shot over the glove hand of Cedrick Desjardins for his second goal of the year. Cincinnati leveled the score at 1-1, when David Desharnais took a backdoor feed from Tyler Howells on the power play and one-timed a shot from the bottom of the circle to the left of netminder Martin Houle at 11:02. It was Desharnais' eighth goal of the season.
The Nailers re-established the lead at 2-1, when Aaron Clarke took a turnover in the Cyclones end and skated around a defender and lifted the puck over Desjardins at 13:35.
The Cyclones took the turnover as a wake-up call and answered with three straight goals. The first came from Barret Ehgoetz-his eleventh of the campaign-at 14:26 from Thomas Beauregard and Scott Reynolds to tie the game at 2-2. Forward Avery Wilson slapped a loose puck in the slot past Houle at 15:07 from Travis Fuller and Chad Starling to give Cincinnati its first lead of the night at 3-2. Desharnais' second of the frame at 15:37 from Matt Macdonald and Cory Urquhart-chased Houle and brought in Wheeling's other goaltender Nathan Marsters, who did not allow a goal the rest of the period.
It was the 18th time this season that Cincinnati scored three or more goals in a period and the fourth time that the club has lit the lamp four times in a stanza.
The second period saw the Cyclones net another pair of goals to open the lead to 6-2. Desharnais completed his hat trick (three goals) at 6:59, taking a lob pass from Urquhart and streaking past the Nailers defenders and shooting the puck between the legs of Marsters to open the 5-2 edge. Ehgoetz tallied his second goal of the night and twelfth lamplighter at 7:45 from Beauregard and Reynolds.
In the third period, Travis Fuller netted his seventh goal at 6:41 and Cory Urquhart picked up his third goal at 8:42 to close out the scoring.
It was the eighth come from behind victory on the season for Cincinnati and the club is now 16-3-2 in its last 21 games. Cincinnati is 21-6-2 with the win-leaders of the North Division, while Wheeling is 9-17-3.
The Cyclones are at Reading Friday night at 7:05pm. The game can be heard in Cincinnati on 96 Rock.
The Cyclones are next at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, January 5 when Reading comes to town. Tickets for all Cyclones games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 513-562-4949 or online at ticketmaster.com.
