Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Wheeling Nailers and Cincinnati Cyclones traded goals throughout the game and the Cyclones came up with a 4-3 win Saturday night at WesBanco Arena.
The Nailers dominated the opening five minutes of play, scoring twice and jumping out to the early 2-0 lead. Kevin Croxton notched the game's first goal, his 20th of the season by ripping a wrist shot past Cody Rudkowski just 1:57 from the opening faceoff. As he walked across the blue line he shot one through the legs of the defender and tucked it inside the left post. Aaron Clarke doubled the score at 4:51 on a great setup from Matt Byrnes. It was Clarke's 14th of the season as Sean Collins earned an additional assist on the play.
Cincinnati came storming back cutting the lead to one just 34 seconds later. David Desharnais tipped the puck out from underneath the glove of Curtis Darling for his 24th goal of the season and league leading 94th point of the year. The Cyclones tied the game at the 10:04 mark of the first on a Mathieu Aubin slap shot.
The two teams traded goals in the opening minute of the second period and followed it up with 19 minutes of scoreless hockey. Olivier Latendresse gave the Cylcones their first lead of the game just 44 seconds from the opening faceoff, sliding home the rebound from a Aubin shot. Only nine seconds later, Vadim Slivchenko drove into the Cincinnati end and tied the game back up. BJ Radovich and Seamus Young assisted on the play.
Ryan Russell notched the game winner at 11:53 of the third. His shot was partially blocked by a Nailers defender and it deflected away from a sliding Darling. The Nailers pulled Darling in the final minutes for the extra attacker. It was the first time all game that the Nailers had an advantage as the Cyclones were not whistled for a single penalty during the entire game.
Wheeling heads back on the road to face the Johnstown Chiefs for an Easter Sunday matchup at 5:05pm. After a game in Dayton on Wednesday the Nailers return to Wheeling Friday night to take on the Chiefs once again. It is West Virginia University Night as Major Harris and Mike Logan will be signing autographs at the game. Call 304-234-GOAL for more information or visit www.wheelingnailers.com.
