Cyclones Win 50th!
March 22, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
WHEELING, West Virginia - The Cincinnati Cyclones became just the fourth team in Cincinnati pro hockey history to win 50 games in a season and only the tenth in ECHL history, in a 4-3 win at Wheeling Saturday night. It was the 24th come-from-behind win for the club this season. Rookie Ryan Russell's goal midway through the third period broke a 3-3 deadlock for the win.
Wheeling raced to a 2-0 first period lead, as the Nailers got goals from Kevin Croxton (his 20th goal at 1:57) and from Aaron Clarke (his 14th at 4:55). Cincinnati got a pair of goals of its own in the opening frame-as half a minute after the lead went to 2-0, David Desharnais netted his 24th score of the campaign from Kyle Bushee and Matt Syroczynski. Desharnais scooped up a rebound left by Wheeling netminder Curtis Darling and fired it into the cage to cut the deficit in half. At 10:04, Mathieu Aubin tallied his 24th score of the year from Jason Deitsch and Olivier Latendresse. The Cyclones controlled the play for most of the second half of the opening frame, outshooting Wheeling, 13-6.
The Cyclones scored in the opening minute of the second period, as Latendresse scored his seventh of the season 44 seconds into the frame. Aubin and Jason Deitsch handed out the assists on the score. Nine seconds later, at 53 seconds, Wheeling leveled the scores, as 16th year pro Vadim Slivchenko picked up his tenth goal. The scores held through the remainder of the period and the game was tied at 3-3 after 40 minutes. Cincinnati outshot the Nailers in the middle period, 9-5.
The game winning goal came 11:53 into the third period, when Ryan Russell collected his first goal in a Cincinnati uniform from Matt Syroczynski and Jon Gleed. It was Russell's first pro game winning goal.
The Cincinnati Cyclones are 40 games above .500, with a 50-10-5 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-22 points ahead of second place Elmira. The win gives Cincinnati a 34-4-3 record since December 15. Wheeling is 18-40-7 and in seventh place in the division. The 50 wins are the most ever by the club. Cincinnati is 10-1 versus the Nailers this season.
The Cyclones are next in action Wednesday night versus Reading with a 7:30pm faceoff scheduled at U.S. Bank Arena.
By winning the North Division, the Cyclones have a bye in the play-in round of the ECHL postseason and will host the winner of the fourth seed-fifth seed, best-of-three series at the end of the regular season. The first game of the best-of-seven series that the Cyclones will play, opens at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, April 11 at 7:30pm.
