Chaz nets two as Jackals ground Bombers 2-1

Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - Chaz Johnson provided all of the offense with his 21st and 22nd goals of the year to lead the Elmira Jackals to a 2-1 win over the Dayton Bombers Saturday night before 3,256 fans at First Arena. The victory allowed the Jackals to maintain their three-point lead over third place Reading, 3-1 winners over Trenton.

Johnson's second of the game at 11:16 of the third period appeared to be a centering attempt as he broke through the left circle and had Pierre-Luc Faubert (two assists) closing down the slot. The puck kicked off of Dayton goaltender Rejean Beauchemin (34 saves) and into the net to put the Jackals in front for the first time in the game on what turned out to be the final scoring play.

The Bombers, as they did in Thursday's 5-3 loss in Elmira, got on the board first and held a 1-0 lead at the end of the opening period.

Mike Berry threw a Brad Bonello rebound into an open net after Bonello's intial shot caught the post and came out to the bottom of the right circle. For Berry, it was his eighth of the year and it came 6:35 into the contest.

Johnson wasted no time in getting the equalizer once the second period got under way. A drive from the slot by Faubert rocketed off of the right pad of Beauchemin and landed on Johnson's stick. He sent the follow-up over Beauchemin's blocker to tie the game at 1-1 at fifty-nine seconds.

Deadlocked at 1-1 entering the final period, Brian Bicek appeared to have put the Jackals on top at 8:21 when he lifted his own rebound home, but Bruce Watson collided with Beauchemin on the rush to the front of the net and was sent off for goaltender's interference.

The ensuing power play failed to click for Dayton (0-for-5 on the night) and just fifty-five seconds after Watson's penalty expired, the Jackals got the game-winner from Johnson.

Benoit Doucet assisted on both goals to bump his team lead in assists and points to 46 and 74 respectively.

Joel Martin picked up the win in net as he stopped 19 of 20 shots to register his 25th victory of the season. He is tied with Johnstown's Ryan Nie for the second most wins in the ECHL. Gwinnett's Craig Kowalski leads the league with 27.

The Jackals outshot the Bombers 36-20, but were 0-for-4 on the power play for a second straight night.

Elmira wraps up its five-game home stand Wednesday night when they welcome in the Trenton Devils in a 7:05 p.m. face-off. It's the final of three Jackals Trading Card Giveaway Nights with the first 2,000 fans receiving commemorative cards of some of their favorite Jackals.
