March 22, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Irish eyes were smiling on #20 Matt Auffrey and the Augusta Lynx on Saturday night, as a power play goal with :30 seconds remaining in the game by the Lynx was the difference in a 2-1 win over the Gladiators in front of 2,831 at the James Brown Arena. Clad in their special St. Patrick's Day jerseys the Lynx mounted a relentess offensive attack in the game, outshooting the Glads 41-21 for the game. It would be the Gladiators who would get on the board first as Matt Anderson created his own space off a Lynx turnover and slipped a wrist shot from the slot behind Lynx goaltender #30 Bobby Goepfert for a 1-0 Gwinnett lead. In the 2nd period, the Lynx dodged an early Gladiators attack helped out by some quality saves from Goepfert. The Lynx finally broke through wheh halfway through the 2nd period, a give-and-go play from #17 Anthony Battaglia to #22 Shane Hynes, netted Hynes a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1 with another assist to #12 Ryan Dingle. The Lynx dominated the 3rd period, outshooting the Gladiators 17-4, and thanks to a late slashing penalty on Gwinnett's Andy Brandt, who chopped #25 Adrian Veideman's stick in two, the Lynx would be set for the late game heroics. With under a minute remaining the Lynx got the puck deep in the Glads end and worked feverishly to keep the puck alive. #9 Louis Goulet got the puck to #11 Matt Christie along the wing and Christie fed the puck to Auffrey who was behind the net to Craig Kowalski's left. Auffrey looked up and flicked a shot from behind the goalline toward the shortside where Kowalski was caught leaning, looking for a pass in front. The puck bounced off Kowalski's catching glove, rolled up his shoulder and directly down his back into the net for the game-winner with :30 seconds to go. It was the second straight night a Lynx player has scored from behind the goalline. The Lynx went 2 for 4 on the power play while the Gladiators finished 0 for 2.
