Reading Royals News Release
Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (37-22-6=80, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL battled back from an early deficit to defeat the Trenton Devils, 3-1, at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. This win extended the Royals home winning streak to four and proved to be the Royals' twenty-first victory of the season at the Sovereign Center (21-7-3). Dany Roussin got what proved to be the game winner on the power play, while the Royals' penalty killers kept Trenton off the board in seven chances with the man advantage-including an extended segment of five-on-three in the third period. Goaltender John Murray (2-0-0; 27/28) picked up his second win in as many starts for the Royals; while Jason Smith (11-17-3; 24/27) sustained the loss.
Trenton struck first 5:31 into the game off a transition rush. Eric Castonguay broke with speed through the neutral zone and fed Colin Pepperall on the right wing side. Pepperall carried into the offensive end and slipped a beautiful diagonal back-door feed to Jim Henkel, who snuck up on the left side of the net to re-direct the puck behind Murray for his twenty-third goal of the year. Reading tied the game 46 seconds into the second period when Charlie Kronschnabel carried deep into the offensive end on the right side and dished off to Malcolm MacMillan in the right circle. MacMillan cut to the center of the ice and ripped a snap shot high stick side on Smith for his sixth goal of the year.
The Royals got what proved to be the game winner 16:20 into the second, when Reading struck on the back end on what had been twenty-three seconds worth of five-on-three. After working the puck for several good scoring chances, Patrick Jarrett found Dany Roussin low on the right side. Roussin attempted to thread one through the crease, and the puck struck a Trenton defender in the leg and ricocheted behind Smith for Roussin's twenty-first goal of the season. Reading picked up some insurance at the 9:29 mark of the third, when MacMillan carried to the half wall on the left wing side and dished to the trailing Dave Pszenyczny, who slipped deep down the left side of the slot and picked his spot, firing low blocker side on Smith for his sixth goal of the year. The Royals and Murray fended off the Trenton attack down the stretch to run Reading's record to 6-3-2 against the Devils with one more regular season game to go between these two teams (Friday, March 28, 7:05 pm at the Sovereign Center).
The Royals return to action on Tuesday night (March 25; 7:00 pm) at the E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio, when Reading will face the Dayton Bombers. The game night broadcast on Tuesday will begin at 6:30 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
