Cyclones Slay Gladiators in Shootout, 4-3

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Barret Ehgoetz' 13th career game-winning goal came in the second round of a shootout tonight. His goal, teamed with a perfect five-for-five save performance from Cincinnati goalie Marc Cheverie, helped propel the Cincinnati Cyclones (5-5-2-1) to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators (8-2-0-3) in front of 8,241 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.

Both teams traded their respective chances in the opening period, but ended up being scoreless through 20 minutes. The Cyclones were finally able to break the deadlock when, at the 11:01 mark, Scott Lehman cashed in on a one-timer to give the home team a 1-0 lead - which they would carry into the second intermission.

The third period was back-and-forth to say the least, as five goals were scored between the two clubs. Gladiators forward Andy Brandt scored a pair of goals, one at 3:22 and the other at 13:40, to give his team a 2-1 lead. Luckily, the advantage would only last 20 seconds as Dylan Hunter camped out in front of the net and blasted home a one-timer past Gwinnett goalie Dave Carrozzi (L, 12 saves, 5-1-0-2) to knot the score at two. Gwinnett regained the lead when a Dan Kissell wrist shot eluded Cyclones netminder Marc Cheverie (W, 21 saves, 5-2-1-1) at the 16:19 mark, giving the Gladiators a late 3-2 lead. Once again, though, the Cyclones were able to rally back as Dustin Sproat notched his first goal of the season with just 2:10 left in regulation to tie the score at three and send the game into overtime.

In the extra session, neither team was able to muster any real scoring chances; so for the second time this season, the Cyclones went into a shootout.

Barret Ehgoetz' was the lone Cyclones goal scorer in the shootout, burying his chance through the legs of Carrozzi. Meanwhile, Cheverie did to the Gladiators shooters what he has done to his last four opponents - shut them down. Cincinnati's rookie netminder turned aside all five Gwinnett offerings to help his team earn the extra point, 4-3 the final. Ehgoetz now has 13 career game-winning goals, which is second most in franchise history. The Cyclones' record in overtime/shootout play is now 3-3.
