Steelheads fall to Thunder

Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, ID- The Idaho Steelheads (5-4-4) saw their four-game unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of the Stockton Thunder (7-1-3) by a 5-4 score before a crowd of 4,858 at Qwest Arena. Both teams led at various points during the contest, but Stockton preserved a one-goal lead by holding off a Steelheads flurry in the waning moments to take five-of-six points from the Steelheads over this week's three-game set in Boise.

Chris Lawrence opened the scoring in the game for Stockton at 6:32 of the first period, but less than eight minutes later Sean Backman countered for the Steelheads by driving home a slap shot for his second of the season. Backman's goal was assisted by Marty Flichel, and gives him three points in three games since being assigned to the Steelheads.

Stockton's Garet Hunt was ejected and assessed a match penalty for intent to injury, as well as a fighting major as a result of his fight with Steelheads defenseman Steve Oleksy; a bout that saw Oleksy land a majority of the blows in the exchange.

After being tied 1-1 after one period, Kael Mouillierat scored his seventh of the season at 3:39 of the second period on a highlight-reel wraparound goal that beat Stockton goalie Bryan Pitton. Mike Gabinet and Mark Derlago assisted on the goal that gave Idaho a 2-1 lead.

At 8:23 of the second period, Stockton's Jason Pitton retaliated against a hit into the boards delivered by Idaho defenseman Guillaume Monast. In the resulting altercation, Monast was not penalized, by Pitton was handed two minutes for instigating, five minutes for fighting, and a game misconduct.

With Stockton facing seven consecutive minutes on the penalty kill and set to be two players short for the remainder of the contest, Marty Flichel helped the Steelheads' cause by scoring his fifth goal of the season; a slap shot from the point on the power play at 8:54 of the middle frame. The goal made the score 3-1, and was scored unassisted.

Stockton surrendered just the one goal on the Steelheads' elongated power play, and at 17:25 swung the momentum in their favor when Chris D'Alvise, an all-star last season, scored a goal immediately from a faceoff to cut Idaho's lead to 3-2. With just 29 seconds remaining in the second period, Bretton Cameron tied the game for the Thunder at 3-3 on a wrist shot from the faceoff circle. Cameron suited up for Idaho in the preseason, was cut by the Steelheads, and signed with Stockton on October 23.

D'Alvise gave Stockton a 4-3 lead at 11:12 of the third period with a power play goal, and eventually completed his hat trick at 15:25 on a breakaway deke against Idaho goalie Mike Zacharias.

Michael Neal scored off a feed from Marty Flichel at 16:33 of the third for Idaho- Neal's second of the season- to cut Stockton's lead to 5-4, but the Thunder thwarted a late attack from the Steelheads to hold the one-goal lead and earn the win.

Zacharias stopped 31 of 36 shots for Idaho; he is 1-1-1. Pitton stopped 17 of 21 for Stockton to improve to 4-0-1.

Idaho and Stockton play Thursday and Saturday night in Stockton. From Stockton, the Steelheads will play three road games in Victoria before returning to Qwest Arena on December 2nd for three games in three nights against the Alaska Aces.
