Cyclones Score Early, Often, In 7-1 Win Over Dayton

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-1 win over the Dayton Bombers on Friday night. A four goal first period explosion opened the door to a six-goal victory over an opponent for the second time in nine days. T.J. McElroy had two goals and an assist to pace the offense, as Ryan Nie re-directed 22 shots in picking up his fifth win with the Cyclones as well as handing out an assist With the win, Cincinnati moves into third place in the North Division-one point behind second place Johnstown and just five in arrears of division leader Wheeling.

It took just 19 seconds for Cincinnati to grab the lead, as rookie Ben Gordon fired home his seventh goal of the season from Mark Van Guilder and Mike Salekin. The lead extended to 4-0 when Cincinnati scored three times in a 2:40 span-all on the power play. T.J. McElroy scored his ninth and tenth scores of the season at 6:12 and 7:18, both from five-on-three situations. Barret Ehgoetz and Van Guilder had the helpers on the first score and Salekin and Jimmy Kilpatrick had the assists on the latter goal. Kilptrick netted his 16th goal at 8:52 from Van Guilder and Kilpatrick to blow the game open. Dayton got on the scoreboard at 19:19 when Dominic D'Amour slammed home his sixth goal. The shots in the opening period favored Cincinnati, 10-6. It was the eleventh time this season that the Cyclones scored three or more goals in a period and the fourth time Dayton was victimized by Cincinnati in this fashion.

The goal by Gordon 19 seconds in was the earliest goal scored in Cyclones history. That eclipsed the mark of 20 seconds set by Thomas Beauregard on opening night at.....Dayton (October 18, 2008). The three goals in 7:18 were the earliest three goals in club history and the four goals in the first 8:52 were the earliest in club history as well.

Cincinnati exploded for three more goals in the second period to put the game out of reach. Ben McLeod tallied his seventh goal at 4:18 from Ian McKenzie and Ryan Nie. Unassisted goals by Justin Johnson (his sixth at 9:45) and McKenzie (his sixth at 14:19) closed the scoring in the period. Dayton outshot the Cyclones, 11-8, in the period.

There was no scoring in the third period, but the Cyclones continued to press forward-outshooting Dayton, 11-6, in the final frame. For the game, Cincinnati outshot the Bombers, 29-23. The Cyclones were three for five on the power play and the penalty killing unit-which entered the night ranked last in the ECHL-stopped all nine shorthanded situations.

Ryan Nie stopped 22 shots in taking the win. Nie also dished off an assist on Cincinnati's fifth goal of the night. Tyler Plante absorbed the loss, stopping nine of 14 shots before leaving early in the second period.

The Cyclones are now 21-15-5 on the season, while Dayton is 21-17-4. The Cyclones host Dayton on Saturday night (January 24) at 7:30pm at U.S. Bank Arena. It is ‘Obama Bobblehead Night' with the first 3000 fans receiving a commemorative of the newest Commander In Chief.

It was the second straight season that the Cyclones teamed with the Patty Brisben Foundation to put on the ‘Pink In The Rink' contest. The promotion was designed to bring attention to women's health issues and featured players in pink jerseys that fans were able to bid on in a post-game auction to help raise funds for the Foundation. For the second straight season, the Cyclones utilized an all-female off-ice officiating crew. Last year, Cincinnati was the first team in pro hockey history to use an all-female crew for a game.

NOTE: With the crowd of 5174, the Cyclones are averaging 20.8 percent more fans than 2007-08 through 21 home games. That is the fourth-largest improvement from last year through 21 games of any professional hockey team in North America (Tulsa-CHL is up 37.9%, Bridgeport-AHL is up 24.5% and Springfield-AHL is up 21.5%). Last year, Cincinnati's season attendance improved 36.8 percent over 2006-07-the biggest increase in all of professional hockey.
