Johnson Called up to Lake Erie

The Gwinnett Gladiators announced today that goaltender Josh Johnson has been called up to the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.

Johnson has appeared in 13 games this season with the Gladiators posting a 7-5-1 record. He has recorded a 3.20 goals against average and a .894 save percentage while with Gwinnett. Johnson was acquired in a trade with South Carolina on November 13th. In four games with South Carolina this season, Johnson posted a 3.20 goals against average and a 2-2-0 record.

The Esko, MN native was 23-13-1 with a 2.80 goals-against average, and a .908 save percentage last season with South Carolina. He also recorded two shut-outs in his 37 games, and was named the Rbk Hockey Goalie of the Week for November 5-11 and December 24-30 and was the RBC Financial Group ECHL Saver of the Month for December.

Prior to turning professional, the 6-foot, 195-pound net minder spent four years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth posting a 22-20-4 record with three shutouts and a 2.71 goals-against average in 51 career collegiate games.

The Gladiators continue the 2008-09 season on the road Friday, January 23rd at 7:30 p.m. as they take on the Florida Everblades in Estero, Florida.

Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 21 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 864 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Eighteen of the 23 teams have played at least five years in their current city.

The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans. The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
