Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs missed an opportunity to tie for the North Division lead as they fell to the Wheeling Nailers Friday night by a score of 3-2.

The Chiefs are now 23-15-2 and they remain second place in the North Division.

Much of the first period was a scoreless battle. The crowd of 4,016, the largest crowd this year, was quickly brought to their feet by a deafening hit delivered by Todd Griffith early in the game. Late in the period Elgin Reid broke the tie, beating Chiefs netminder Kris Mayotte on a shorthanded rush. In spite of the goal Mayotte was outstanding in the first, turning aside 8 shots.

As the second period progressed the Nailers extended the lead to 3-0 with two goals from Erik Johnson, including one on the power play.

The Chiefs staged a rapid comeback in the third period, scoring in the opening minute on the power play. Kyle Bushee took a feed at the point from Petr Pohl and beat Curtis Darling for his third goal of the season and Johnstown's first power play tally in seven games. Bushee's shot banked off the post then off of Curtis Darling's back and across the goal line.

The Chiefs needed less than five minutes to score again as Blair Yaworski beat Curtis Darling to the short side on the power play. Yaworski's seventh goal of the season had cut the deficit to a single goal but the Chiefs were unable to find the equalizer.

Mayotte made 16 saves for Johnstown while the power play went 2-for-9.

Mark your calendars, the Chiefs are back on home ice on Wednesday, January 28 and will be hosting the Mississippi Sea wolves.
