Cyclones Come Up Short In 9-7 Bid

WHEELING, West Virginia - The Wheeling Nailers are off to their best start in team history and it showed with four goal periods in the second and third frames in a 9-7 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday night. The Cyclones surrendered a club record nine goals in the defeat. Matt Syroczynski registered a hat trick (three goals) for Cincinnati.

Wheeling opened the scoring 6:23 into the contest with a powerplay goal from Rob Sirianni, his second of the season. A little more than a minute later, Ben Gordon circled the Wheeling net and took a feed from Michael Cohen to level the scores. Ben McLeod added the second assist on the goal. Cincinnati grabbed the lead at 17:01, when Thomas Beauregard re-routed a shot just inside the right post for his league-leading fifth goal of the season. Matt Syroczynski and Sean Perkins added the helpers.

The Nailers, who led the ECHL with six second period goals, added four more to the total in the middle frame. Cincinnati extended its lead to 3-1, when Matt Syroczynski tallied a powerplay goal from Beauregard and Kyle Rank, 5:51 into the frame. Wheeling then closed the period with four straight goals. Nick Johnson scoring powerplay markers at 13:29 and 19:21. Tobia Holm netted the two in between at 14:50 and 17:22. The Nailers were a perfect three-for-three with the man-advantage in the period.

In the third period, each team scored four times. Matt Syroczynski completed his hat trick for Cincinnati with a pair of goals. Wheeling allowed the final three goals of the game after building a 9-4 lead.

Curtis Darling took the win stopping 21 shots, while Loic Lacasse absorbed the loss turning aside 25 shots.

The Cyclones are 0-2-1 on the season, while Wheeling is 3-0. The Cyclones play host to the Dayton Bombers at U.S. Bank Arena tomorrow night for a 7:30pm tilt. There will be a special banner raising ceremony prior to the start of the game, featuring the Kelly Cup.
