Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers played their first of three games in three nights against the Sea Wolves losing the contest by a score of 5-2.
The Sea Wolves struck first as Ryan Cruthers blasted a shot past a sprawling Checkers netminder Maxime Daigneault at the 3:55 mark of the opening period giving Mississippi a 1-0 advantage. The Checkers would tie things up when Joe Barnes streaked in on the right wing boards and blasted the puck between the legs of Sea Wolves goalie Ryan Munce at 9:28 tying the contest at 1-1. It didn't take long for the Sea Wolves to hit back when Travis Lisabeth gaining control of the puck inside the Checkers zone and cutting to the middle of the ice flipped a shot that found its way past Daigneault 23 seconds later helping Mississippi retrieve a one goal lead after twenty minutes.
Charlotte would continue to pour shots into Ryan Munce and it was a turnover inside the Sea Wolves zone that led to Jeff Miles beating Munce over the glove side at 8:09 locking the contest at 2-2. Late in the period, the Sea Wolves were awarded a power play and it was Kyle McAllister that beat Daigneault low to the stick side just 15 seconds into the man-advantage putting Mississippi up 3-2 following two periods.
The Sea Wolves wouldn't allow the Checkers to tie the contest again as they captured a two goal lead when Alexandre Parent tipped a Michael Couch point shot behind Daigneault at 14:59 putting Mississippi up 4-2. Chase Trull would add an empty netter and the Sea Wolves skated away with a 5-2 victory.
Both teams will battle twice more in the next two nights in Mississippi as the Checkers continue their six game road swing.
The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers are entering their fourth season of play at Time Warner Cable Arena. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $396.
