Thunder Acquires Jeff Kyrzakos From Charlotte
October 24, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, the proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League's Edmonton Oilers and American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons, has acquired forward Jeff Kyrzakos (kerr-ZACK-is) from the Charlotte Checkers in exchange for future considerations, Thunder head coach Chris Cichocki announced today.
Kyrzakos, 23, has tallied one assist in one game with two penalty minutes for Charlotte this year and enjoyed a career-high 53 points (21g-32a) in 74 combined games last season for Charlotte and the Phoenix RoadRunners, additionally appearing in one Kelly Cup Playoff game.
"Jeff is a big forward who can play center or on the wing; I like his versatility," said Cichocki. "He had a breakout year last season and we're expecting him to be a solid contributor in all areas of our club. He can play on the power-play, take key faceoffs and he'll be a big addition to our penalty kill - he's not afraid to block shots. (Springfield assistant coach) David Bell gave us a ringing endorsement on his contributions after he coached Jeff in junior hockey."
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound forward has skated in 139 career ECHL games with Charlotte and Phoenix, scoring 74 points (32g-42a) while amassing 98 penalty minutes. Kyrzakos has also scored one goal in five career Kelly Cup Playoff games.
The native of Mississauga, Ontario appeared in seven games with Western Michigan University (NCAA) in 2004-05 and followed by skating in 92 career junior games for the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League, scoring 86 points (36g-50a) while posting 17 points (11g-6a) and 20 penalty minutes in 19 career postseason contests.
In addition, the Thunder announced defenseman Mark Adamek was transferred from the three-day to seven-day injured reserve list.
The Thunder returns to play with a Friday night road game against the Victoria Salmon Kings, starting at 7:05 p.m. from Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre (1420 KSTN, www.StocktonThunder.com).
The Thunder was voted "Best Local Sports Team" by readers of San Joaquin Magazine, has led the ECHL in attendance for three consecutive seasons and drew 239,337 fans to Stockton Arena in 2007-08. Season tickets, group tickets, individual tickets and mini plans are on sale now.
