Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Altoona Curve continued its strong play at Blair County Ballpark on Friday night as Mike Colla, Anthony Claggett and Noah Krol combined to shutout the Akron Aeros, 2-0, in the first game of a four-game series. Colla (2-1) tossed a career-high six innings and earned the first win of his career as a starter, while Krol, picked up his ninth save of the campaign. It is the third shutout of the year for Altoona and all three of them have been by the score of, 2-0.
Colla received run support from his offense early in the game as Altoona found its way on the scoreboard in the first inning off starter Austin Adams (4-3). With Quincy Latimore on at first and one down, Jordy Mercer clubbed a double to deep left-center field to bring Latimore home and place Altoona ahead of the Aeros, 1-0.
The Curve weren't done scoring as in the second Mercer once again brought home a run as he lined one to shallow center that went in, and then out, of the glove of centerfielder Jordan Henry, that scored Brock Holt to make it 2-0.
That would be all the runs that Colla would need as he did not allow a hit in his final two innings of work. All told, Colla allowed just three total hits while striking out four and walking two. Claggett pitched the seventh and eighth innings without allowing a run while Krol set down the Aeros in order in the ninth for the save.
Mercer finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles to go along with an RBI while Holt and Tony Sanchez each chipped in with two hits of their own. Sanchez went 2-for-4 with two singles in the game, which was also his 23rd birthday.
With the win, Altoona moves back above .500 at 20-19 and will remain in first place in the Western Division of the Eastern League where they have been since after their game on May 12th.
The Curve (20-19) and Aeros (20-21) will match up for a doubleheader at Blair County Ballpark beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday. For the Curve in game one, they'll send RHP Aaron Pribanic (3-1, 2.48) to the hill and he will be opposed by LHP T.J. McFarland (1-1, 5.64). After game one, there will be a 30-minute break to prepare the field for the second seven-inning game that will take place on Saturday. In game two, the Curve will start RHP Bryan Morris (1-1, 4.11) and he will be opposed by RHP Paolo Espino (0-0, 2.67).
