Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - In the second marathon game of the season between the two clubs, the Bowie Baysox (20-20) claimed a, 3-2, win in 16 innings over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (18-21) on Thursday night at The Diamond. The game was the second longest in franchise history, trailing only the Squirrels 18-inning loss to the Baysox at Prince George's Stadium on April 30th.
Right-hander Edwin Quirarte walked Carlos Rojas, leading off the 16th inning, to set up the Baysox game-winning rally. Rojas was bunted to second base, and scored the game-winning run when Ronnie Welty doubled up the left-field line. Quirarte (0-2) was tagged with his second loss of the season.
The Squirrels grabbed a quick lead with back-to-back doubles against Bowie right-hander Wynn Pelzer in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Ryan Lormand ripped an opposite-field double to right-center field. Nick Noonan followed and doubled to the opposite gap in left-center field to put Richmond ahead, 1-0.
Richmond left-hander Eric Surkamp rolled through the Bowie lineup in order the first time through, turning in a perfect first three innings. However, in the fourth, Greg Miclat led off with a double down the right-field line. Two batters later, Robbie Widlansky singled back through the middle to tie the game, 1-1.
Neither starter factored in the decision as the ballgame stayed tied into extra-innings. Pelzer left after 5 1/3 innings, having conceded a lone run on four hits. He walked one and struck out five. Surkamp was certainly deserving of a win, but settled for a no-decision in his longest outing of the season. He worked 7 2/3 innings, allowing just a lone run on five hits. He walked one and struck out five.
The Baysox looked to take control of the game with an unearned run against right-hander Dan Otero in the 10th inning. Xavier Avery led off the inning with a single. Adam Donachie bunted him to second base, and he scored to put Bowie in front, 2-1 when Sharlon Schoop committed two errors on one play. Miclat sent a soft-line drive to the shortstop Nick Noonan. Noonan played the ball cleanly and threw to first base. Schoop was late getting to the bag and couldn't make the play. He then threw errantly to the plate trying to cut down Avery.
However, pinch-hitter Jose Flores was the recipient of a walk from Bowie closer Jose Diaz leading off the bottom of the inning. A batter later, Lormand sent a soft-ground ball to second base that Miclat misplayed to put two aboard. Noonan then sent another ground ball to Miclat, which the second baseman handled and flipped to second base for a force of Lorman. The shortstop Pedro Florimon, attempting to complete a game-ending double-play, sailed the relay-throw over the Squirrels' dugout. The error allowed Noonan to score to tie the game, 2-2.
Both clubs got outstanding relief. Right-hander Ronnie Ray worked four scoreless innings for the Squirrels, facing the minimum while spanning the 11th through 14th innings. That effort was matched by Baysox left-hander Nick Bierbrodt, who also fired four scoreless innings. Left-hander Pedro Viola (3-1) earned the win over two scoreless innings of relief.
The Squirrels will travel to Reading, PA, to open a three-game weekend series against the Reading Phillies (Philadelphia Phillies) on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch for the series opener is scheduled at 7:05 PM as RHP Justin Fitzgerald (2-3, 4.08) makes the start for Richmond against RHP B.J. Rosenberg (0-0, 1.83) for the R-Phils.
