Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (22-18) notched a 3-1 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (12-25) Friday night in front of 5,863 fans at Waterfront Park. The Thunder took advantage of Portland miscues in the win as two Sea Dog errors and a wild pitch led to all three Trenton runs. In the first game of the three-game series, Thunder starter Dellin Betances won his third start of 2011.
Early miscues cost the Portland Sea Dogs as the Thunder fortunately found themselves ahead 3-0 after two frames. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the first, Melky Mesa grounded a ball to Sea Dog second baseman Oscar Tejeda, who booted the ball into right field. Two runs crossed home plate, and the Thunder took a 2-0 early lead.
Trenton would add a run to their 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Addison Maruszak scored on a wild pitch by Sea Dog starter Alex Wilson. Maruszak lead the inning off with a double to deep center and was advanced to third on a ground ball to second base off of the bat of Austin Krum.
Thunder starter Dellin Betances, who notched his third win of the season, was strong once again. The top-ranked pitching prospect in the Yankees' system hurled five innings of one-run ball, striking out five batters along the way. Josh Schmidt pitched the final two innings for the Thunder to notch his second save in 2011.
The Thunder continue their three-game series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox) at Waterfront Park Saturday night at 7:05 PM. Craig Heyer (3-2, 3.03) gets the pearl for Trenton.
