'Wolves Drop Series Opener to Baysox

The SeaWolves dropped their second straight on Friday night in the series opener at Prince George's Stadium, 6-2 to the Bowie Baysox.

The Baysox jumped ahead in the bottom of the first against Erie starter Luke Putkonen. Xavier Avery led off with a double and Greg Miclat walked putting two on for Robbie Widlansky. Widlansky doubled to left, plating both Avery and Miclat for a 2-0 Bowie lead.

In the third, Avery led off with his second double of the game. With one out, Widlansky singled home Avery for a 3-0 Baysox edge. Steve Lerud walked putting runners on first and second for Brandon Waring. Waring singled to left, scoring Widlansky and on a Bryan Pounds error, Lerud came home to score for a 5-0 Bowie lead.

Bowie then went ahead 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Greg Miclat homered to right for his first long ball of the season.

Erie broke up the shutout bid in the eighth against reliever Dan Klein. Justin Henry led off and walked. Jamie Johnson followed with his second single of the game, putting runners on the corners. A wild pitch brought home Henry making it 6-1. With two outs, Pounds singled home Johnson, cutting the Bowie lead down to four at 6-2. The ‘Wolves would get no closer.

Putkonen (0-5) allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.

Relievers Cory Hamilton and Rob Waite kept the ‘Wolves in the game tossing three hitless innings in relief of Putkonen.

The ‘Wolves and Baysox meet in the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium...6:35 First Pitch. Righty Jacob Turner (1-1, 2.58 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Brian Matusz (MLB REHAB).
