Cougars Select Winnipeg Defenceman Max Martin in Second Round of 2014 WHL Bantam Draft

Prince George, B.C. - With the 27th overall selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, the Prince George Cougars have selected defenceman Max Martin (Winnipeg, MB).

Martin (5'11, 176 pounds) is a left-handed shooting defenceman with some notable offensive upside.

In 32 games with the Winnipeg Monarchs, Martin scored 18 goals, and added 41 assists for 59 points. He also had 30 penalty minutes. Martin also contributed two goals and 15 points in eight playoff games for the Monarchs.

"He's a strong puck moving defenceman who competes hard and he has excellent vision," said Prince George Cougars Senior Scout Bob Simmonds. "He's the type of player who could one day quarterback our power play and also adds some bite."

Simmonds adds, "We were thrilled that Max Martin was still available to us in the early stages of the second round."

Martin is the first defenceman to be selected by the Cougars in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft and is also the first defenceman since Tate Olson in 2012 to be selected by the Cougars in the second round.

The Cougars are next scheduled to pick in the fifth round (93rd overall).
