Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Kane County (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate) took a lead in the third inning and never gave it up, defeating Fort Wayne 4-3 on Thursday night at Parkview Field. The Cougars won the final game of the three-game series after the two teams split the first two games.
The TinCaps (12-14) struck first in the first, when Tucupita Marcano lined a triple to the right-center field gap with one out and promptly came home to score on a wild pitch. The 19-year-old finished the game with two hits, his fourth multi-hit game in seven games.
Kane County (16-11) bounced right back with a single run in the second to tie the game. Buddy Kennedy doubled down the left-field line to lead off the inning, followed by an Alek Thomas swinging-bunt base hit that put runners at the corners with no one out. Two consecutive outs kept the runners put, but another swinging-bunt base hit (this one by Eddie Hernandez) brought home Kennedy to knot the game, 1-1.
Fort Wayne reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the second, scoring two runs without recording a hit. With one out, Luis Almanzar, Nick Feight, and Jawuan Harris all walked to load the bases. Xavier Edwards was then plunked by a pitch to score Almanzar, and after a hard Marcano lineout, Grant Little drew another walk to score Feight and make it a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars surged ahead in the top of the third, pounding out four straight two-out hits to erase the deficit and take a 4-3 lead. Consecutive hits by Zac Almond (double), Buddy Kennedy (double), Alek Thomas (triple) and Blaze Alexander (single) produced three Kane County runs.
After seven runs were scored in the game's first two and a half innings, the pitching settled in for both sides. Gabe Mosser went six innings in his start for the TinCaps, tossing three straight scoreless frames to finish his outing with a flourish. The Pennsylvania native threw 95 pitches in his start, his second straight start in which he has thrown at least 95 pitches.
The relief pitching was outstanding for both the 'Caps and the Cougars. Fort Wayne received two scoreless innings (with three strikeouts) in relief from Carlos Belen, coupled with a scoreless inning (featuring two strikeouts) from Jonathan Guzman.
Kane County's bullpen was lights out. After Franklyn Soriano pitched just 1.1 innings in his start (surrendering all three runs on one hit and four walks), Kenny Hernandez and Blake Workman picked up the slack. Hernandez went 4.2 innings scoreless with three strikeouts, followed by a dazzling Workman performance that featured three scoreless and hitless relief innings with six strikeouts.
