South Bend Cubs News Release

Burlington, IA: After being rained out in their intended series opener against the Burlington Bees last night, the South Bend Cubs returned from back-to-back off nights in a doubleheader from Community Field on Wednesday to face the Bees. In a tight and low-scoring pair of games, the two teams split the twin bill with the Bees taking game one 2-1 and the Cubs winning game two 2-0. Each club remains around the top of their respective divisions.

Burlington, who leads the Western Division after finishing in last in 2018, walked-off the Cubs in game one in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Cam Sanders got the game one start for South Bend and continued his dynamic start to the season with five innings of one-run baseball along with five strikeouts. Sanders started the year with over 15 straight scoreless innings on the mound.

With the Bees up 1-0 in the 5th inning, South Bend's 19-year-old center fielder Cole Roederer came to the plate and delivered another clutch base hit. He doubled home D.J. Artis to tie the game at 1-1.

As the game turned for the final two innings, the Cubs turned to lefty Ryan Lawlor to keep the game tied. After a clean 6th inning, Lawlor returned for the bottom of the 7th. Burlington picked up runners at the corners with a chance to walk-off South Bend. On a fastball down the middle, D.C. Arendas smashed a line drive up the middle to give the Bees the win.

Right-handed reliever Tyler Smith picked up the win for Burlington after tossing 2.1 innings with a run allowed. He is now 3-0. Lawlor takes the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season.

In game two, Derek Casey returned from the injured list and put together his best start in a South Bend uniform. The right-hander out of the University of Virginia threw four innings of shutout baseball and struck out five batters. He took a no-decision as the length of his start did not qualify for the win.

In another low-scoring seven inning game, the Cubs did just enough to come away with the game two shutout win. The game winning RBI came in the top of the 5th inning when the red-hot Andy Weber drove in Rafelin Lorenzo on a RBI sacrifice fly. An inning later, Lorenzo doubled to put South Bend up 2-0.

The lefty Jack Patterson did the rest. Patterson, in his second Midwest League appearance, picked up right where he left off from his debut and dazzled in three scoreless innings. He earned the win and in 6.1 combined innings since being called up, he has given up just a run along with eight strikeouts.

With the split, the Cubs will look for the series victory tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in the third and final game from Community Field. Right hander Eury Ramos is the expected starter for the Cubs.
