Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Despite a quality start from Andrew Cabezas, the Cedar Rapids Kernels dropped a 2-0 decision Thursday night to the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Michael Plassmeyer tossed a career-high 6.1 shutout innings to win a pitchers' duel within the rubber game.
Cabezas (0-3) surrendered the first run of the contest during the fifth inning. Grant Witherspoon hit a leadoff single and quickly advanced to second base via wild pitch. Following back-to-back fly outs, Bowling Green (16-11) claimed a 1-0 lead with Tony Pena's RBI double. Cabezas finished the contest with a personal-high-tying six innings pitched, and he became the fifth Kernel to record a quality start this year.
Plassmeyer (2-1) carried a perfect game into the fifth as part of a dominant start. He retired the first 14 batters that he faced before Andrew Bechtold broke up the gem with a single. Plassmeyer only allowed three total hits over 6.1 frames and tallied a career-best eight strikeouts in a quality start.
The Kernels (12-14) had the bases loaded with no outs in the seventh and eighth innings but did not score. A strikeout from Plassmeyer and a double play induced by Justin Marsden closed the bottom of the seventh. Marsden got out of his own jam in the eighth with another double play followed by a diving catch in center field for Beau Brundage.
Bowling Green scored a late insurance run to secure a 2-0 advantage. Witherspoon collected a one-out single within the ninth and reached third base on a stolen base coupled with an error. Roberto Alvarez singled to drive in Witherspoon for the game's final run.
Marsden earned his first hold of the season, and Chris Muller relieved Marsden for the ninth and pitched a perfect frame to notch his team-high-tying third save in as many opportunities.
This six-game Kernels homestand continues Friday at 6:35 p.m. with the opener of a three-game series against the Dayton Dragons. Cedar Rapids right-hander Blayne Enlow (2-2, 7.64) and Dayton right-hander Ricky Salinas (0-0, 6.75) are the probable pitchers. Broadcast coverage with Morgan Hawk will be available on 1450 KMRY AM, 93.1 KMRY FM, and KCRG 9.2 along with online coverage at www.kmryradio.com, www.kernels.com, and MiLB.TV.
