Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors, official ECHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, have two players who have been selected to play for the National Conference at the 2009 ECHL All-Star Game. Rookie F Matt Pope and second-year LW Mark Derlago will both represent Bakersfield at the contest, to be held on Jan. 21 in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Pope, 24, has been among the ECHL's rookie scoring leaders all season. He currently leads the Condors with 17 goals and 30 points, which rank second and fifth, respectively, in the league among first year players. The Bemidji State University grad was selected by the fans as the Condors Kern Trophies Player of the Month in November, and currently has a five-game point streak (4g-4a) with a goal in four straight.
Derlago, 22, who is under contract to the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League, has been in the AHL since late November, but is still tied for fourth on the Condors in points this season. The Brandon, Manitoba, native had 9g-11a-20pts in just 12 ECHL games, and at the time of his recall was in the Top 5 in league scoring. In 2007-08, Derlago led all ECHL rookies in goals (39) and established new Condors rookie records in goals and points (57), earning a professional try-out with Manitoba late in the season.
The 17th Annual ECHL All-Star Game will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1230; stay tuned for further broadcast details. Both players will also compete in the Skills Competition as well, which is on Jan. 20.
WHAT MARTY RAYMOND SAYS:
"Although we knew that he had great skills, Matt Pope has been a good surprise for us this season," said Head Coach Marty Raymond. "And he's getting better every day, which is good news for us. Mark Derlago has certainly proven that he's an American Hockey League caliber player and was dominant while he was with us. And although we'd like to be selfish and keep him here, we're enjoying his success at the next level."
