Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors collected more than a playoff spot during the last month of the regular season - they collected cell phones, canned food and pillows as well. On Tuesday, March 14, the Condors offered $1 admission to fans that brought in old cell phones, PDAs or used ink & fax cartridges to be recycled. The items collected went to Community Connection for Child Care, a local non-profit agency that uses the money from recycling to fund day care centers and training across Kern County.

Less than one week later, the Condors called on fans to help feed the needy with a canned food collection on Monday, March 20 sponsored by KERN 1410 AM. Again, $1 admission was offered to participating fans that brought in 2 cans of food. A total of 703 lbs of food was collected benefiting the Golden Empire Gleaners. The Gleaners help alleviate hunger and provide food for needy persons of all ages. Over 55 million pounds of food has been distributed throughout Kern County in the last 17 years.

The highlight of the collections came in the form of a giant pillow fight on Friday, March 31. The Bakersfield Condors, WB-TV 12, 106.1 KRAB Radio and American Business Machines sponsored an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for largest pillow fight. Fans who brought a pillow got to participate in a 30 second pillow fight at the start of the first intermission. Pillows were then tossed onto the ice for collection and donation to the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, Goodwill and other local charities.

Although the total fell shy of the current world record, set by 3,548 participants at the University of Albany, on April 17, 2005, there were plenty of pillows going to a good cause - 1,107 to be exact. Last season, 1,044 fans participated in the Condors first attempt to break the record last season.

The pillows were collected by The Salvation Army, Goodwill, Kern County Department of Public Health and The Bakersfield Homeless Center. Kim Long, a consultant with many non-profit agencies in Kern County, helped get the pillows to the Homeless Center for the second year in a row.

"This pillow drive fills a very important need for the Homeless Center," said Long. "Clean, new pillows are a luxury and we are always excited to be able to distribute them to the families who need them."

The Bakersfield Condors are heading into Round One of the playoffs. Game dates and locations will be determined by the final league standings. To purchase your tickets to watch the playoff action, contact the Sales Department of Bakersfield Sports Entertainment at 324-PUCK (7825).
