Alaska Aces News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - Alaska winger Alex Leavitt has been named the CCM Tacks ECHL Rookie of the Year for the 2005-06 season in a vote of head coaches from around the league.

Earlier this week, the 21-year-old from Edmonton landed berths on the all-ECHL first team as well as the all-rookie team. With two goals and two assists in Wednesday's 7-5 win at Stockton, Leavitt extended his lead in the ECHL scoring race to five points over linemate Mike Scott with a total of 91 on 26 goals and a league-leading 65 assists. As the final weekend of the regular season approaches, the 5-10, 175-pounder appears poised to become only the third rookie in the history of the ECHL to lead the league in scoring and the first in 15 years to accomplish the feat.

Earlier this season, Leavitt earned a trip to the ECHL All-Star Game in Fresno, where he scored a goal as the National Conference beat its American counterparts, 7-6. He registered a season-high five points with a goal and four assists in a 6-3 win over Stockton January 21 and has at least two points in 26 of Alaska's 70 games to this point. Leavitt signed with the Aces after playing two seasons in the Western Hockey League and two at the University of Wisconsin during his amateur career.

Leavitt and the Aces (52-11-7) will try to wrap up their second straight West Division title tonight with a win over the Pacific Division champion Fresno Falcons at 6:00 p.m. AST. If Alaska should lose and Las Vegas beats Long Beach at home, then the Aces still can take home the division crown with a victory at Bakersfield in their regular season finale Saturday at 6:00 p.m. AST. All Alaska Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com, where all home games and selected road contests also are available on a pay-per-view basis, courtesy of B2 Networks.
