San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - Netminder Ryan Cyr stopped 21 of 22 shots and was helped by three different goal scorers, as the Phoenix Roadrunners defeated the Gulls 3-1 in San Diego's regular season home finale Friday night, before 7,462 at the ipayOne Center
It was Cyr's first pro win, snapping a personal 19-game winless streak split between the Roadrunners and Bakersfield Condors. His victory also snapped a 14-game winless streak for the Roadrunners (20-46-5), who close out their season Saturday in Las Vegas.
The loss didn't mean anything in the standings for the Gulls (34-29-8), who are already set to take on the Fresno Falcons in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. It however, ended a five-game unbeaten streak (3-1-2).
After a scoreless first period, Phoenix finally drew first blood 4:13 into the second on defenseman Taylor Christie's third goal of the season. Dean Tiltgen had the puck outside of the left circle and dropped it to Christie, who slapped it past Gulls and ex-Roadrunner netminder Michael Mole.
San Diego got into some penalty trouble midway through the frame and got burned, as the Roadrunners capitalized on a two-man advantage at the 11:19 mark. Just seven seconds after Jesse Bennefield took a roughing penalty, rookie Conrad Martin was whistled for delay-of-game. And on the ensuing five-on-three power play Justin Quenneville squeezed home a one-timer underneath a sliding Mole for his 12th goal.
Erik Johnson got the Gulls on the board 3:17 into the third period with his second goal since turning pro 12 games ago. After taking a drop pass from Mark Wires, Johnson wound up from just above the right circle and beat Phoenix goaltender Ryan Cyr.
The Roadrunners, however, regained their two-goal cushion at 11:33 when Dusty Demianiuk knocked in his second of the year. Kevin Ulanski had the puck at the right point and whipped a pass across the blue line to Demianiuk, who one-time it past Mole. Brad Woods, who also assisted on Quenneville's goal, earned his second helper of the night.
Notes: San Diego finished 20-10-6 at home this season, going unbeaten eight of its final nine games (6-1-2)... The Gulls are still unbeaten in 17 of their last 23 games overall (14-6-3)... They finished the season series 3-4-0 against Phoenix... San Diego's average attendance has now increased the last three seasons... Steve Hildenbrand had his seven-game point streak snapped... The Gulls finish the regular season Saturday at Stockton, with game-time set for 7 p.m. San Diego is set to meet Fresno in the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs Tuesday at Save Mart Center, with the contest slated to begin at 7:30 p.m..
