COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Columbus Blue Jackets have assigned defenseman Aaron Johnson to the Syracuse Crunch, the club's American Hockey League affiliate, Blue Jackets General Manager and Head Coach Doug MacLean announced today.
Johnson, 20, was called up from Syracuse on December 2 and made his NHL debut in that night's game against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. He registered his first NHL point with an assist vs. the Nashville Predators two nights later. He appeared in three games, collecting an assist and two penalty minutes with a -1 plus/minus rating.
Selected by Columbus in the third round, 85th overall, at the 2001 Entry Draft, Johnson signed a multi-year contract this past June and is playing his first season of professional hockey. In 20 games with the Crunch this season, he has collected 2-6-8 with 25 penalty minutes and -1 plus/minus rating.
He spent the previous four years playing in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with the Rimouski Oceanic and Quebec Remparts. He registered 40-155-195 and 409 penalty minutes in 252 career games and added 8-11-19 and 72 penalty minutes in 40 career playoff contests. He also was invited to the Canadian National Junior Team Selection Camp in 2001 and 2002.
