Hudler's Recall Makes it Six Griffins in Motown
December 9, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins on Tuesday announced that the Detroit Red Wings have recalled forward Jiri Hudler.
Hudler, summoned after Detroit placed left wing Steve Thomas on injured reserve, joins five members of the 2003-04 Griffins on the Red Wings' roster, including forwards Darryl Bootland (recalled Nov. 7), Kevin Miller (Dec. 9) and Mark Mowers (Nov. 19), and defensemen Niklas Kronwall (Dec. 9) and Jamie Rivers (Oct. 18).
The 19-year-old Hudler has points in six straight Griffins games (2-7-9) and eight of the last nine (2-9-11), and ranks second overall on Grand Rapids in scoring with 16 points (4-12-16) in 15 outings. In addition, his plus-11 rating ties Danny Groulx for highest on the club.
Hudler has appeared in seven contests with the Red Wings this season, contributing one assist and 10 penalty minutes with a minus-one rating, while averaging 7:45 of ice time.
Four of the Griffins' top five scorers are now with the Red Wings, with the lone exception being forward Nathan Robinson, who was reassigned by Detroit earlier today. With the absence of Miller (10-8-18, 1st in scoring), Hudler (4-12-16, 2nd), Mowers (8-6-14, 3rd), Kronwall (2-11-13, T4th) and Bootland (5-0-5, T14th), the Griffins now find themselves without 44 percent of this season's goal production and 37 percent of their scoring total. Coupled with the six transactions from earlier today, the Griffins have established a new franchise high for player moves in a single day.
Despite their depleted ranks, the first-place Griffins (15-6-4-0) will try to extend their six-game winning streak and eight-game unbeaten streak on Wednesday, when they travel to Gund Arena for a 7 p.m. start against the Cleveland Barons.
