Sharks Sign Barons Defenseman Stafford

CLEVELAND - The San Jose Sharks today announced that defenseman Garrett Stafford has been signed to a standard player contract. Doug Wilson, General Manager of the San Jose Sharks, made the announcement. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Stafford, 23, was initially signed to a Professional Tryout Agreement. In 20 games with the Barons this season, Stafford is the team's fourth-leading scorer with 14 points, registering 5 goals and 9 assists. The 14 points are tied for the fifth-most among AHL defenseman and tied for the seventh-most among all AHL rookies. His 9 assists are tied for fourth among all AHL rookies as well.

Prior to the season, the 6'0", 190-pound defenseman competed for roster spots with the Los Angeles Kings and the Dallas Stars. With Los Angeles, Stafford competed against San Jose in the first annual Los Angeles Rookie Tournament.

Stafford previously played at the University of New Hampshire from 1999-2003. Overall, Stafford appeared in134 collegiate games posting 14 goals and 67 assists for 81 points. His decorated collegiate career includes UNH's Best Defenseman honors in his sophomore and junior seasons.
