Barons Players To Buy Gifts For Children

Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND - In conjunction with the Cleveland Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Cleveland Barons are organizing "Carkner's Christmas". Michael T. Lehr, President of the Cleveland Barons, made the announcement.

Matt Carkner, a defenseman for the Barons, and his wife Kary are organizing the program that provides children with gifts. The program benefits children that lack the necessities needed for day-to-day life. Each Cleveland Baron player adopts a child. Every player will then buy a variety of gifts that fulfill these needs for the children. Each child will also receive three gifts from their wish list.

The Barons conducted a similar program last season titled "Swiss Christmas". Steve "Swiss" Wissman, former Barons equipment manager, started the program. After participating in it, Carkner made it a priority to continue the program.

"Last year, we bought everything from socks to mattresses, things that most people take for granted every day," stated Carkner. "Seeing the impact our gifts and visits had on these children was very special and I really feel that this program needed to continue."

The Barons will travel to Mary Bethune Elementary School, Bolton Elementary School, and Alfred Benesch Elementary School on December 17th and 18th to distribute the presents.

"Our players and staff have always stepped up and participated in community events," stated Lehr. "But to have Matt come forward and run with this speaks volumes about his character and is a reflection of the mission of the Barons as an organization."

Tickets can be purchased at all TicketMaster Outlets, the Gund Arena Box Office, and charge-by-phone be calling 216-241-5555. More information about the Barons is available by calling 216-420-0000 or by Crashing The Net at www.clevelandbarons.net.
