Tuesday, February 21; Nolan Loaned to AHL's Houston Aeros
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that goaltender Robby Nolan has been loaned to the AHL's Houston Aeros. Nolan has spent time on three ECHL teams this season, playing in two games for the Eagles -- both last weekend.
Nolan spent last season with the CHL's Missouri Mavericks where he was voted the league's Most Outstanding Goaltender, was the winning goalie in the league's All-Star game & led the league in goals-against average (2.07) & shutouts (7), while ranking 3rd in wins (26) & save percentage (.928).
Following the best season of his career last year, Nolan began this season with the ECHL's Chicago Express before being traded to the Toledo Walleye. The Eagles acquired him in a trade with the Walleye Feb. 6. So far this season, he's compiled a record of 9-13-3 (including one shutout), with a GAA of 3.32 & a .889 save percentage.
Wednesday, February 22; Eagles Topple Reign, 6-4
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles ended a three-game losing streak in a big way with a 6-4 win over the Ontario Reign. Kevin Ulanski (four points), Michael Forney & Joey Sides (three points apiece) led the Eagles' offense, while Kyle Jones backstopped his 24th win of the year (second-most in the ECHL).
Friday, February 24; Eagles Sign Familiar Name/Face as Emergency Goalie
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that they've signed Morgan Cey as an emergency goaltender to back-up Kyle Jones while Andrew Penner is on the IR. Cey spent the 2008-09 season with the Eagles as Penner's back-up, and is the older brother of current Eagles forward Patrick Cey. The netminder has appeared in 121 career games in the ECHL with two other teams (Johnstown Chiefs & Mississippi Sea Wolves).
In 25 games with the Eagles in 2008-09 (while they were in the CHL), Cey posted a record of 15-9-1, with a 3.40 GAA & a .897 SV%. He was the winning goalie of record in the 2009 CHL All-Star game that saw the host Eagles defeat a team made of all-stars from the rest of the league, 8-4.
Friday, February 24; Colorado Eagles to Host 2013 ECHL All-Star Game; Club Brings All-Star Game to Northern Colorado for 2nd Time in Five Years
The Colorado Eagles and the ECHL announced this evening that the team will host the league's All-Star game next season, bringing some of the world's finest hockey players to Northern Colorado in January of 2013. The Budweiser Events Center will host the All-Star game, presented by Poudre Valley Health System, on Wednesday, January 23.
Friday, February 24; Parade to Penalty Box Ends With Eagles Falling, 8-9, to Ontario in Shootout
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Ontario Reign edged the Colorado Eagles, 9-8, in a shootout that was one of the wildest games ever played at the Budweiser Events Center -- on several levels. A total of 28 penalties were called between the two teams, resulting in a special teams nightmare that saw 11 of the 16 regulation goals scored via special teams (10 on the power play). Five of the goals were scored on 5-on-3 power plays, including four in the second period alone.
Saturday, February 25; Eagles Take 5 of 6 Points in Series Win Over Ontario
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Ontario Reign, 5-4, in overtime, winning their second of three meetings this week. Aaron Schneekloth, the league's leading scorer among defensemen, started the night being recognized for hitting 300 points in his Eagles career last week, and ended the game by playing hero with the overtime winner.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Thursday, March 1 & Saturday, March 3; Colorado Looks to Clinch a Playoff Berth vs. Bakersfield
The Eagles have a chance to clinch their 9th consecutive playoff berth -- and first in the ECHL -- this week against the Bakersfield Condors. The Condors enter the week with the fewest points in the league (38), and can max out at 70. The Eagles enter the week with 66 points, meaning that a combination of Colorado wins and Condors losses (they host Utah Tuesday night) could push Colorado into a guaranteed playoff spot a month before the season ends. Colorado is 2-0-0 against Bakersfield at the Budweiser Events Center, out-scoring them 9-3.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
DOWN THE HOME STRETCH - The Eagles had their best month of the season at home during February, going 6-0-1, with the only blemish coming in last Friday night's 8-9 shootout loss to Ontario. Colorado's previous best month at home (points-wise) was November when they went 4-4-0; they also went 3-0-1 in December. It's a good time to be playing well at the BEC, as the Eagles will have nine home games in March -- their most in any month this season.
BERTHING PERIOD - Three teams have clinched a playoff berth in the past couple weeks, and Colorado could become the fourth with a good week against the Bakersfield Condors. Bakersfield enters the week having to win out to reach 70 points. The Eagles enter the week with 66 points. The Condors host the Grizzlies Tuesday night before traveling to Colorado for games Thursday & Saturday.
POWER SURGE - Colorado's power play is currently on a hot streak, having tallied 10 of the team's 22 overall goals during the past five games (45%) -- including the game-winner in overtime Saturday night. In that time, the PP has converted at a clip of 41.7%, moving it into 6th place in the ECHL to start the week at 20.2% overall on the season. Maybe most impressive is the fact that the Eagles went 7-for-15 against Ontario last week; the Reign entered last week with the best PK in the league and enter this week in 3rd place.
AARON IT OUT - Aaron Schneekloth is having arguably the best season of his career. The veteran defenseman who surpassed 300 points as an Eagle a couple weeks ago has been leading the league's d-men all season long and enters this week with a 12-point lead in points among ECHL blueliners. He also leads his brethren in goals, assists, power-play goals, power-play assists & shots. His 52 points are 14 shy of his career high, and place him behind only Chad Costello (69) & Kevin Ulanski (53) on the team this season.
GAINING ON McGRANE - Kevin Ulanski should be a strong candidate to win the ECHL's Player of the Week award after his series against the Reign; he recorded 11 points (4-7-11) in the three games last week -- three more than any other player in the league. But there's a bigger distinction on his horizon...He now sits just six points behind Ed McGrane for 4th place on the Eagles' all-time points list with 341 points (113-228-341) in just 232 games.
