Gladiators Garnet and Gold Goes "Pink" this Weekend
February 27, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators 5th Annual "Pink in the Rink" charity fundraiser and cancer awareness event is set for this weekend, Friday, March 2nd, Saturday, March 3rd and Sunday, March 4th as the Gladiators continue their traditional "March To The Playoffs" with back-to-back-to-back matchups featuring two games against Trenton and a key battle against division-rival South Carolina.
"Pink in the Rink" is the Gladiators highest-profile annual fundraising effort, netting over $225,000 to benefit numerous local cancer-related entities in North Georgia during the first four editions of the "Pink in the Rink" weekend. This season, the Gladiators have teamed up with "The Sport of Giving" and the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" as the primary beneficaries of the 3-game "Pink in the Rink" weekend event. These and other organizations pre-sold specially designated fundraising tickets with a portion of the admission price allocated to benefit their specific cause. In addition, each participating charitable organization shares the opportunity to receive a portion of the proceeds generated as a part of various team-sponsored fundraising activities associated with "Pink In The Rink".
In what has become a local sensation and fan favorite, the Gladiators will skate on a pink ice surface during the games over the weekend. It will be the fourth consecutive season that the Gladiators will skate on pink ice, and the fifth time in team history that the team has skated on colored ice during a home game. (The ice was dyed green for St. Patrick's Day on March 17th during the 2006-07 season.) The Gwinnett Center Ice Crew, led by Primary Zamboni Driver and Lead Ice Technician Ryan Guley, will conduct the intricate operations required to colorize the pink ice on Thursday, March 1st.
Fans who wish to participate and make a donation to the Gladiators fundraising efforts will have the opportunity to stop by any one of the tables reserved for participating organizations on the main concourse. In addition, the Gladiators will feature a variety of of official commemorative "Pink in the Rink" team merchandise and apparel throughout the weekend with a portion of the proceeds from each sale going towards the fundraising effort.
In addition, a portion of the proceeds of the Gladiators annual Specialty Jersey Auction will be included in the fundraising efforts earmarked to benefit "Pink in the Rink" fundraising efforts. This season, the live Specialty Jersey Auction will be held following the Gladiators final regular season home game of the year on Saturday, February 17th, during which the players will wear the one-off design jerseys featuring a unique tartan-plaid St. Patrick's Day theme.
The Gladiators are the ECHL Affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres and the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League and are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
