Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV - Sean Collins' first goal of the season served as the game winner to cap off a three-point night and a 3-2 win for the Wheeling Nailers over the Dayton Bombers Wednesday night at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling is now 5-1-1 on home ice and has not lost a game in regulation at home since October 26 (six games).
Despite being outshot 17-9 in the first period it was the Nailers who went to the dressing room with a 1-0 lead. Just 2:27 into the opening frame David Laliberte converted an Adam Henrich pass for his third goal of the season.
The Bombers came storming back in the second. Matt Beaudoin scored twice within 2:34 and put Dayton ahead 2-1. Yannick Tifu and Bobby Chaumont assisted on both the goals with the first one coming on the power play.
Before the second period ended, the Nailers tied the game. At 17:13 Collins and Laliberte set up Henrich for his ninth goal in as many games. With Collins and Henrich on a two-on-two, Collins slid a backhand pass perfectly onto the stick of Henrich as he crashed towards the net.
Collins picked up the game winner at 7:30 of the third. After Rejean Beauchemin made the initial save on a Laliberte wrist shot, the rebound deflected off the body of Collins and into the goal. It gave Collins his second three-point game of the season and raised his point total to 18 on the season.
David Brown looked solid stopping 40 shots for the second straight night to earn the win. The Nailers power play scored once on only two opportunities as the two squads combined for just 20 penalty minutes.
The Nailers return to the ice on Friday night to take on the Chiefs at 7:30p.m. in Johnstown. Their next home game will be Saturday against the Chiefs at 7:35p.m. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a WesBanco Buck mini-bobblehead. There will also be a teddy bear toss to benefit Toys-for-Tots.
