November 21, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (9-5-0) extended their home winning streak to five and picked up their third straight win overall after a 4-2 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots (2-9-1) on Saturday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 5,078.
In a sluggish first period it was the Everblades that cracked the scoreboard first. David Cornacchia registered his second goal of the season after collecting a rebound from a Mathieu Melanson shot from the left circle, and deposited it into the net at 10:28 of the period. The assist by Melanson extended his point-scoring streak to a team-high seven straight games. The lead however was short-lived as the Ice Pilots tied the contest at one less three minutes later. Bryan McGregor notched his fourth goal of the season when his wrist shot from the left circle beat Everblades goaltender Justin Peters inside the right post at 13:02.
With the score tied at one entering the second period, the Everblades took the lead for good early in the frame when Brad Zancanaro's centering pass ricocheted off a Pensacola defenseman and into the net just 4:19 into the period. Steve Czech and Kyle McAllister assisted on Zancanaro's third goal of the season. Just over four minutes later the Everblades extended their lead to 3-1 when Czech notched his first goal of the season with a shot from right point that slipped past Pensacola net-minder John Daigneau at 8:44.
Pensacola once again battled back to trim the Everblades lead to one when Luke Erickson's power play goal found the back of the net from the right post at 19:12. The power play marker was the first allowed by the Everblades at home this season after killing off the first 26 on home ice this season.
A tense and tight third period saw the Everblades look as if they grabbed a 4-2 lead midway through the frame when Zancanaro' shot from the slot clanked off the left post and then off the back of Daigneau's back. The goal light came on and the referee initially pointed to the net, but after conferring with the linesmen and goal judge, the goal was waved off. The Everblades with-stood the Pensacola pressure over the closing minutes and eventually sealed the win on Melanson's empty net goal with 48 seconds remaining. Czech and Cornacchia assisted on Melanson's eighth goal of the season.
Peters earned the win in net for the Everblades by stopping 26 of 28 shots to increase his record to 6-3-0, while Daigneau dropped to 2-3-2 after allowing three goals on 35 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 0-for-3, while the Ice Pilots finished 1-for-8.
