South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - Andrew Gordon and Matt Scherer scored goals for the South Carolina Stingrays, but they were not enough as the visiting Charlotte Checkers beat the Rays 4-2 at the North Charleston Coliseum, handing them their third loss in a row.
"I really like our work ethic," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "The guys are working hard and getting chances, we just need to execute on those chances to give us a chance to win."
In the first period, it was Charlotte who got on the board first, getting a goal from Kaleb Betts, his second of the season, to give them a 1-0 lead. But the Stingrays would strike back and tie the game up at 1 when Gordon scored his 4th goal of the season, a power play goal at 14:30, from Paul McIlveen and Steve Pinizzotto.
The second period came and went and brought with it the same story as the first. Charlotte took the lead 2-1 on Betts' second goal of the game, his third of the season. The Rays got the equalizer later in the period when Scherer got his second goal of the season at 12:59 from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Matt Reid. After 40 minutes of play the score was knotted up at 2.
In the third period, the Checkers took the lead for the third time on the night when Lee Falardeu scored his 5th goal of the season. They would add to their lead on a power play goal by Dusty Jamieson, his 6th tally of the year, giving them a 4-2 lead, which would be the eventual final score.
"I told the guys to take one game at a time," said Bednar. "Don't worry about yesterday, because every day is an opportunity to turn things around. Every day is an opportunity to win."
The winning goaltender was Matt Zaba who stopped 33 of 35 shots. The losing goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 17 of the 21 shots he faced. On the power play the Stingrays went 1 for 7, while they killed off 2 of the 3 short handed situations.
Davis Parley was back with the Stingrays tonight, dressing for the first time since October 30th, the day before he had an appendectomy. He backed up Johnson tonight, and will most likely start sometime this weekend, either on Friday night or Saturday night.
The Stingrays are back in action Friday night when they look to exact a small measure of revenge against the Gwinnett Gladiators. The Stingrays lost to the Gladiators in Duluth, GA last week, and welcome them to the North Charleston Coliseum for the first time this season. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M.
The Stingrays would like to wish everyone a very happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
