Chiefs Cap Road Trip with Crushing 9-1 Loss in Portland

Portland, Ore. - The Spokane Chiefs couldn't keep pace with the Portland Winterhawks Sunday night, capping their weekend road trip with a 9-1 loss.

The Winterhawks came out hot right away in the first period, putting up three unanswered goals at 1:20 (Marcus Nguyen), 9:16 (Clay Hanus) and 14:24 (Tyson Kozak).

Portland piled on another goal to take a 4-0 lead at 7:42 in the second period (Klassen).

The Chiefs answered when rookie forward Jake Gudelj deflected a shot from Saige Weinstein into the net at 13:24 for his second career goal. Spokane kept the birds at bay for the rest of the period to make it 4-1 heading into the second break.

The Winterhawks ran away with it in the third period, though, scoring five unanswered goals the final fight-riddled 20 minutes. It started at 5:27 when Luca Cagnoni netted his seventh of the year. Then Klassen found the twine for the second time of the night at 14:22 to make it 6-1, Portland.

Portland spent the rest of the period on the power play, after Bear Hughes (10-minute misconduct), Chase Bertholet (major - boarding, game misconduct), Ty Cheveldayoff (major - checking to the head) and Brayden Crampton (10-minute misconduct) had all left the ice early due to penalties.

The Winterhawks capitalized on the man-advantage three times, with Jack O'Brien scoring two goals and Luke Schelter putting one in the net to cap the scoring at 9-1.

Mason Beaupit started in net for Spokane and stopped 52-of-61 shots faced. On the other side of the ice, Taylor Gauthier turned aside 20-of-21 Spokane shots. The Chiefs went 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Up next, the Chiefs will return home to hose the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, February 25 at 7:05 p.m.
