Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Win 3 of 4 During Busy Week

February 21, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release

Facing a four-game gauntlet last week, the Winterhawks picked up six of a possible eight points to keep pace in the highly competitive U.S. Division title race. Portland tallied more than five goals in two of those wins, marking the fifth and sixth games in which they have scored five or more times in nine total games during the month of February.

Hot Hawks:

Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme posted his first WHL hat trick (and multi-goal game) on Friday against Tri-City, then struck again on Saturday against Seattle to mark his first goalscoring streak of the year.

Forward James Stefan picked up a goal and four helpers last week and shares the team lead in goals with 25.

Forward Gabe Klassen recorded three goals and one assist in four games last week, including a pair of strikes on Sunday to mark his first multi-goal outing since Dec. 14 against Everett.

Forward Tyson Kozak put up five points (2G, 3A) and found the scoresheet in three of four games as he climbed to 25 goals on the year, good for a share of the team lead with Stefan.

Defenseman Clay Hanus led all Portland skaters with six points over the four games last week, highlighted by his four-point exclamation point on Sunday. With 51 points on the year, Hanus ranks second among WHL blueliners in scoring.

Play of the Week:

Robbie Fromm-Delorme grabbed his first hat-trick on Friday night, and his first of three that evening is worth another look. Cross Hanas starts the play behind the net with a quick escape before faking the "Michigan" (or is it "Dishigan?") and spinning a pass to the waiting Fromm-Delorme.

Weekly Rewind:

Portland 4 at Spokane 2 (Tuesday):

Buoyed by three consecutive goals across the second and third periods, the Portland Winterhawks returned to the win column with a 4-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Tuesday.

Portland 6 at Tri-City 2 (Friday):

Robbie Fromm-Delorme tallied a third-period hat trick and Dante Giannuzzi made 42 saves as the Winterhawks posted five unanswered goals to knock off the Tri-City Americans 6-2 in Kennewick on Friday.

Portland 1 vs Seattle 5 (Saturday):

Reid Schaefer scored twice and Kevin Korchinski picked up three assists as the Thunderbirds posted five unanswered goals to top the Winterhawks 5-1 on Saturday.

Portland 9 vs Spokane 1 (Sunday):

Four goals in the opening two periods and five in the third carried the Winterhawks past the Spokane Chiefs by a 9-1 score in the clubs' final meeting of the regular season.

The Week Ahead:

A long road trip up north awaits this week when the Winterhawks visit Prince George, BC for a back-to-back set against the Cougars on Friday and Saturday.

It will be a homecoming for goaltender Taylor Gauthier, who spent four full seasons and part of a fifth with the Cougars before being acquired by Portland midway through this season. On the flipside, the weekend also presents another opportunity for Hawks players to reconnect with former teammate Jonas Brøndberg, who went the other way in that trade.

Puck drop is set for 7:00 P.M. for both of those contests, and you can catch all the action on WHL Live!
