Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Four goals in the opening two periods and five in the third carried the Winterhawks past the Spokane Chiefs by a 9-1 score in the clubs' final meeting of the regular season.

Gabe Klassen (2G, 3A), Clay Hanus (1G, 2A), Jack O'Brien (2G, 1A) and James Stefan (3A) led the way offensively for the high-flying Hawks, while Taylor Gauthier stopped 20 of 21 shots in a rebound showing from his first defeat as a Winterhawk.

Portland opened the game on a tear as Marcus Nguyen helped himself to a goal off a Spokane turnover at 1:20 of the first period and Hanus ripped home his 13th of the year eight minutes later for a 2-0 Hawks lead, the eventual game-winning goal. Before the end of the frame, a Tyson Kozak power move on the power play gave Portland a three-goal advantage as the captain hit a team-high 25 tallies on the year.

The Winterhawks continued to roll into the sandwich stanza with Klassen's 19th of the year at 7:42 as he collected a pass in the high slot and spun a shot past the leg of Spokane's Mason Beaupit. The Chiefs finally broke up the onslaught with Jake Gudelj's second of the season at 13:24 of that period, but the game had already been decided from there.

During a physical third period that featured three fights, Klassen potted his second goal, O'Brien netted a pair of power play tallies and Luca Cagnoni and Luke Schelter each found the goal column as well to sum up a 9-1 win.

In total, 15 Winterhawks skaters recorded a point, with six posting two or more.

The Hawks head north next week to take on the Prince George Cougars on Friday and Saturday before returning home on Saturday, March 5.
