Swift Current Broncos News Release
Regina, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos (19-25-5-1) got a pair of goals from Karson King and Josh Davies, as well as a last-second save from Isaac Poulter in a 4-3 win over the Regina Pats (18-24-1-1) Monday afternoon.
The Broncos opened the scoring 2:19 into the game when Rylan Gould fired a shot on goal from the left circle. Drew Sim made the save but couldn't corral the rebound, and Karson King batted it out of midair to put the Broncos ahead 1-0.
The lead lasted just 58 seconds due to an unfortunate break. Eric Van Impe went to fire the puck down the boards in the Pats zone, but his stick broke as he went to shoot. That sent Tanner Howe away on a breakaway and he beat Isaac Poulter over the glove on the backhand to tie the game.
The Pats then took a 2-1 lead on their first power play of the game. Connor Bedard skated toward the slot from the left circle before firing through traffic, beating Poulter on the blocker side.
This time the Broncos responded quickly. Less than three minutes later, some excellent forechecking led to the puck sitting at the side of the Regina net. Josh Davies jarred it loose and King picked it up, beating Sim through the five hole for his second of the game, tying the game at two 9:38 into the first period.
The two teams went into the intermission tied at two and the shots 12-9 in favour of Regina.
Swift Current killed off a pair of penalties in the second period before regaining the lead. Connor Hvidston hit the post from the slot off the rush, and Josh Davies jumped on the rebound for his 14th of the season to put the Broncos up 3-2 at the 11:18 mark of the second.
Josh Filmon drew a penalty with just 11 seconds left in the period as the Broncos went into the second intermission leading 3-2 and with 1:49 of power play time awaiting them to start the third.
The Broncos couldn't capitalize on the power play in the third period and the Pats tied the game a few minutes later.
Stanislav Svozil took a wrist shot from the blue line that sailed through traffic in front of Poulter, tying the game at three 4:41 into the third period. Much like after Bedard's goal, the Broncos answered quickly.
Davies did a lap around the Regina zone before turning and firing the puck on goal from the top of the right circle. The shot caught Sim off guard, beating him clean under the glove for Davies's 15th of the season, restoring the Broncos lead 7:59 into the third.
The game remained 4-3 Swift Current for the remainder of the period and the Pats pulled Sim for the extra attacker with two minutes left. The Broncos kept Regina's scoring chances to a minimum during the 6-on-5 sequence, until the final shot of the game.
Bedard fired the puck across the slot from the right wing to the left circle, and a quick shot on net by Tanner Howe was denied by the right pad of Poulter as he slid to his right. The rebound then sat at the side of the net, and Owen Pickering blocked a second opportunity before the puck ended up along the boards and time expired, sealing a 4-3 Broncos win.
Swift Current is now off before they begin a three-in-three weekend at Mosaic Place against the Moose Jaw Warriors (29-17-3-2) on Friday.
