Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (36-11-2-1) extended their win streak to six games on Monday afternoon as they knocked off the CHL's top ranked team the Winnipeg ICE (32-8-2-1) 6-3 at Rogers Place.
The ICE opened the scoring just 6:21 into the first period as Carson Lambos was able to fire home a point shot through traffic on a Winnipeg power play to stake the visitors to the early lead.
Matthew Savoie added to the ICE lead just over five minutes later as he took a cross-seam pass from Owen Boucher in the right-circle and snapped a shot just inside the near post.
The Oil Kings cut the Winnipeg lead in half with just under four minutes left in the first period as Justin Sourdif scored his fifth goal in an Oil Kings uniform, and first at Rogers Place, as he finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play between himself, Jalen Luypen and Carter Souch on an Edmonton power play.
The Oil Kings were able to carry the momentum over into the second period as they would score four goals in the middle stanza to take a 5-2 lead into the second intermission.
Carter Souch tied the game 7:28 into the period as he roofed a shot after being sprung on a breakaway thanks a beautiful pass from Sourdif.
Edmonton took their first lead of the game just 30 seconds later as Josh Williams re-directed a shot-pass from Kaiden Guhle in front of the Winnipeg net on an Oil Kings power play.
Williams tacked on his second of the period at 11:25 as he finished off a three-way passing play between himself, Jakub Demek and Souch.
With just over four minutes left in the period, Sourdif netted his second goal of the afternoon as he wedged home a rebound in front of the Winnipeg net after Dylan Guenther was initially stopped on a partial shorthanded breakaway.
In the third period, the ICE were able to get back to within two goals after Skyler Bruce cashed in on a Winnipeg power play just 5:30 into the frame but that was as close as they would come after Oil Kings captain Jake Neighbours sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Sebastian Cossa recorded his league-leading 25th win of the season making 22 saves while Daniel Hauser turned away 29 shots in the losing cause. The Oil Kings went two-for-four on the power play, the ICE were two-for-five.
Next up, the Oil Kings continue their six-game homestand on Friday, February 25 when they welcome Connor Bedard and the Regina Pats to Rogers Place at 7:00 PM.
