Checkers to stage three home games this week

(Charlotte, NC - Monday, January 26) - The Checkers will prepare for a four-game week this week, including three games at home. Charlotte snapped a three-game losing streak and a six-game winless streak (0-5-1) with a 3-1 win over the Greenville Grrrowl Saturday night. Ryan Cuthbert's goal at 7:08 of the third period in Saturday's win halted a 284 minute Checkers' goal-scoring drought that spanned five games and nearly 14 periods. Charlotte will try to build on Saturday's win to move up in the ECHL's Southern Division standings.

TUESDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will conclude a three-game homestand Tuesday when they'll host the South Carolina Stingrays at Cricket Arena. Until the last meeting between the Checkers and South Carolina on Dec 16, which the Stingrays won 2-1, the series between these two teams saw the visiting team win the previous nine meetings. South Carolina begins the week just three points ahead of the Checkers in fourth place in the ECHL's Southern Division with a record of 22-14-2 for 46 points. The Stingrays are coached by Jason Fitzsimmons, and are affiliated with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and AHL's Toronto Roadrunners.

THURSDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers travel to the Greensboro Coliseum Thursday night to meet the Generals for the fifth time in the eight-game season series. Charlotte is 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 on the road versus the Generals so far this season. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Generals nipped the Checkers 1-0 last Friday night in Charlotte, the only game Greensboro played last week. The Generals begin the week at 25-17-1 for 51 points, eight ahead of the Checkers with Charlotte having two games in hand. Greensboro's Center Mark Turner leads the Generals in scoring with 18g, 35a = 53 points. The Generals are coached by Rick Adduono.

FRIDAY'S PREVIEW: Charlotte will host the Pride for the second of three times this season at Cricket Arena. Florence enters this week with a record of 14-20-6 for 34 points, and stands in seventh place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference. Recently Florence picked up defenseman Ryan Gaucher, an ECHL All-Star last season, as well as flashy forward Bobby Russell. The Pride is affiliated with the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and the AHL's Norfolk Admirals. Florence is coached this season by former Roanoke Express coach, Perry Florio.

SATURDAY'S PREVIEW: The Checkers will host the Columbia Inferno for the first time this season and the first of two times at Cricket Arena in the five-game season series. In the last meeting between the two teams on December 19, the Checkers erased a 5-1, third period deficit with four goals in a 3:46 span to send the game to a shootout. Charlotte prevailed in the shootout to snag the two points and cap one of the most incredible comebacks in team history. Columbia starts the week in first place in the ECHL's Southern Division with a record of 26-13-4 for 56 points. Forward Tim Smith leads the Inferno in scoring with (15g, 35a = 50 pts). The Inferno leads the ECHL in scoring with 4.00 goals per game. Columbia is coached by Scott White and is affiliated with the NHL's Vancouver Canucks and the AHL's Manitoba Moose.

• Rookie defenseman Marc. St. Jean leads the ECHL in short-handed assists with (4).

• The Checkers are in the midst of six home games in seven games overall.

• Kevin Caulfield was placed on waivers last Friday after deciding to remain in Boston to continue to grow his real estate business.

• Charlotte is in sixth place in the ECHL's Southern Division of the Eastern Conference, three points behind South Carolina for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division.

• The Checkers have played the fewest home games of any team in the ECHL at (17).

• The Checkers are 28th on the power play at 11.34% while 7th on the penalty kill at 86.44%.

• Charlotte moved up into the 10th spot in attendance in the ECHL with crowds of 5,497 and 6,498 this past weekend.

• Goalie Scott Meyer holds down the 20th spot in the ECHL goaltenders parade with a 2.60 GAA, .920 save percentage and an 8-9-1 record.

• New center Richard Keyes scored his first goal as a Checker, a game-winning goal, in Charlotte's 3-1 win over Greenville Saturday night.
